CoA yet to refer Hardik-Rahul controversy, says BCCI ombudsman DJ Jain

Hell broke loose in Indian cricket a few months ago when ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya and batsman KL Rahul were found making controversial remarks on a popular television show hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar. The controversial comments by the duo led to a huge outrage and they were even suspended, missing a number of games for India. It was particularly disappointing for Hardik since he was about to make a comeback in international cricket after a long injury break.

The Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suddenly lifted the suspension saying the players had already faced enough punishment. Prior to that, the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court was being delayed since an ombudsman was yet to be appointed. Last month, former justice DK Jain was appointed as the BCCI ombudsman by the apex court to look into, among others, the controversy surrounding Pandya and Rahul.

On Tuesday, Jain, however, said the CoA was yet to refer him the matter involving the two India cricketers who are facing a probe over their allegedly sexist remarks made on the show ‘Koffee With Karan’. Jain, who took charge at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai recently was quoted as saying by agencies: “I have not taken up any matter Suo Motu for now. Once the CoA refers a case to me, I will take it up.”

The CoA led by former CAG Vinod Rai had decided to lift the suspension on the two cricketers following consultation with amicus curiae PS Narsimha. The suspension was lifted pending an inquiry. The controversy featuring the two cricketers though saw disagreement between the officials themselves.

Earlier, both the cricketers were sent back home from Australia just ahead of the ODI series. Hardik was later allowed to play the ODI series against New Zealand partially and the T20I series fully while Rahul played games for India ‘A’ against England Lions at home.

Though the two players continue to play for the country at the moment, eyes will be on what verdict they get over the controversial episode.
