A new era has gotten underway in Indian cricket with Rohit Sharma taking over the captaincy hat from Virat Kohli in T2oIs. The latter stepped down from the role following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. In his very first assignment as a full-time captain of the T20 team, Rohit led brilliantly as the Men in Blue whitewashed the T20 World Cup runners-up New Zealand 3-0 in the T20I series.

Virat Kohli, who announced his decision to quit the captaincy before the World Cup, was also quite successful in his tenure as he had led the team to a series of victories in the SENA countries which no other captain has been able to achieve to date. Under Virat, Team India also enjoyed series victories in the West Indies and Sri Lanka. Overall, the Men in Blue managed to win 32, losing 16 out of 50 games played under captain Kohli.

MS Dhoni led Team India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title

Meanwhile, the biggest achievement for team India undoubtedly came under the stewardship of MS Dhoni when the team won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. It was team India’s first World Cup title (including T20 WC & ODI WC) after a long wait of 24 years. MS Dhoni, one of the finest captains not only India but also the whole cricketing world has ever produced, proved each and every doubter wrong by winning the mega event in his very first big tournament in charge as a leader.

Indian captains in T20Is:

Captains Mat Won Lost %
MS Dhoni 72 42 28 59.28
Virat Kohli 50 32 16 64.58
Rohit Sharma 22 18 4 81.81

Speaking of their performances as batters while leading the side in T20Is, Virat Kohli is way ahead of his predecessor MS Dhoni. Virat has achieved 1570 runs and staggering 13 half-centuries as compared to Dhoni’s 1112 runs and zero fifties. One of the reason of MS Dhoni’s highest score being only 48* in T20Is could be the position where he batted which was either no.6 or 7 in the format. Rohit Sharma’s batting average (43.55) as a captain is almost close to Kohli’s (47.57) and he will be having a chance to surpass it now that he has been appointed the full-time captain.

Indian captains in T20Is:

Captains Matches Runs Highest Score Average Strike Rate 100/50
Virat Kohli 50 1570 94* 47.57 140.55 0/13
MS Dhoni 72 1112 48* 37.06 122.6 0/0
Rohit Sharma 22 871 118 43.55 158.94 2/7

Rohit Sharma, who already has a formidable track record as a skipper winning 18 out of 22 T20Is, will be looking to taste more success and go past MS Dhoni’s wins as a captain which stands at 42 out of 72 times. With another T20 World Cup next year in Australia team India’s future as T20 team seems to be in good hands of Rohit Sharma who will like to clinch that title for the national team after achieving 5 trophies as a captain for IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.
