The match between Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions will forever be remembered for two things. One would obviously be the game-changing partnership between Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. The other should be the special catch Corey Anderson plucked out of thin air to dismiss a dangerous looking Dinesh Kartik.
Anderson’s exploits on the field are well-known. He announced himself on the international scene way back in U-19 World Cup of 2008 where he plucked a beauty mid-air to his left to dismiss Tanmay Srivastava. The Kiwi allrounder since making his debut in 2012 for the Black Caps has taken many beauties.
The most memorable one was against the Australians where he dismissed Nathan Lyon in his follow through. Lyon mistimed one while trying to straight drive Anderson. With the ball dipping on him, Anderson tumbled down in his follow through to pluck a one-handed catch onto his left.
New Zealand has to a greater extent revolutionised fielding with player diving left, right and over to pull off some of the most unbelievable catches. The latest trend of relaying a travelling ball over a boundary, back into the field of play while maintaining balance to catch a lobbed ball back onto the field, can be traced back to a domestic match between Northern Districts and Central Districts. The snippet went viral all on YouTube.
Be it Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum or Martin Guptill, the Kiwis have set a high standard in the last couple of decades to revolutionise the game of cricket. The Black Caps are a sight to watch at slips, or deep and even in their follow throughs.
Coming back to last night, Dinesh Karthik was threatening to post a total well beyond the reach of the Daredevils with his 61 off 30 balls. Corey Anderson plucked yet another beauty off the bowling of Pat Cummins to dismiss the in-form Kartik.
The ball lobbed past Anderson’s head but the Canterburian leapt up in the air, grabbed the ball one-handed and nonchalantly kicked the ball away to display his swagger. Sunil Gavaskar was quick to describe the whole event as ‘jaw-dropping’, even though the IPL has seen some the most incredible catches.
