The Australian cricket team played the first ever T20 international match against New Zealand in February 2005. At that time, the two teams did not take this format so seriously. Even a majority of the fans considered this match as an exhibition battle between the Trans-Tasman rivals.

However, Australian captain Ricky Ponting did not like losing any match. He guided Australia to a memorable win in the first T20I match at the Eden Park. Ponting batted at number four for the visitors and missed his maiden T20I century by two runs only.

Ponting came out to bat when the team’s score was 21-2. He aggregated 98 runs off 55 deliveries, hitting eight fours and five sixes to take Australia to a score of 214 in their 20 overs. In reply, the New Zealand cricket team managed 170 runs as they suffered a defeat in the first T20I game.
