Mustafizur Rahman was recently ruled out of Bangladesh’s ongoing three-match series versus Afghanistan at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Dehradun. He played for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and suffered an ankle injury. The left-arm pacer couldn’t recover in time and was hence benched for the series that followed India’s T20 tournament.
The 22-year player forayed into international cricket in 2015 as a wily customer who made life hard for the batsmen. Soon after, he was rewarded with an IPL contract, however, frequent injuries have marred his career somewhat. Courtney Walsh, Bangladesh’s bowling consultant, sounded alarmed by how things have panned out for Fizz and also talked about his role during urgent scenarios.
“That made it more frustrating”- Courtney Walsh
“It’s a cause of concern for me. It’s the second time he has come back from the IPL with an injury. We need to keep him (Mustafizur) fit and make him stronger because he is young, talented and has everything to offer. We need to get his mind right and get his bowling up to the standards it can be,” Walsh was quoted as saying by CricBuzz.
“But at the end of the day, the player himself got to take responsibility because you are working for two different environments. We didn’t know about his injury. That made it more frustrating. Had we known earlier, we could have done something to get him back on the park quicker. He came to play a practice game. The message has been sent to him. He has to communicate through the right channel, he added.
Bangladesh were beaten black and blue in the opening match by Asghar Stanikzai’s boys. Mustafizur’s absence was definitely felt by the visitors as the likes of Shafiqullah Shafaq blazed away in the death overs. The second match will be played tomorrow at the same venue and it’s a must-win one for Shakib Al Hasan’s men.
