Bangladesh bowling coach, Courtney Walsh’s first training camp with the team was marred due to rain. This isn’t an ideal beginning to the campaign for the former West Indian fast bowler, who is trying to set things in place and improve the skills of the Bangladeshi bowlers.
The West Indian legend, for now, has the emphasis on the basics and said that he is trying to work on the basics with the national bowlers. He said that initially, he is trying to fine-tune and rectify some of the elementary mistakes the bowlers are making.
“We have been trying to fine-tune and correct some of those mistakes, to improve in certain areas,” he said. Walsh lamented the fact that weather has marred the practice sessions. But he said that they are trying to make most of their time and the team is going outdoors whenever the weather permits.
“Progress has been made, but unfortunately we have been having some bad weather, so not as much progress has been made as I would have liked. But we are not wasting the days. Whenever we can, we are going outdoors.” Walsh was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Need more consistency, control, and variation.
The 54-year-old admitted that Bangladeshi bowlers still have to work on many areas including consistency, control, and variation. He further added that a coach can only help to an extent and said that after stepping on the ground it’s up to the players only.
“They are young and exciting, but they have to be a little bit more consistent and keep the pace up. Once they get on to the park, they have to do it. We can’t do it for them. I have been telling them that ‘you are in control of your own destiny, just go out there and get the job done. Try to improve and learn all the time’. If they can achieve the first part – control and consistency – before the competition starts, I will be very happy,” the legend stated.
Focus on Mustafizur Rahman
The left-arm pacer hasn’t been at his best since recovering from the shoulder surgery. Walsh said he noticed that Mutifizur is not at his best and said they are trying to correct it.
“I noticed he was falling away a little bit in England. We have been trying to get him to be more upright and balanced so that he can pull through. We are also trying to get his pace back to where it used to be and get him a little bit closer to the stumps.” Walsh said about the Fizz.
