CPL 2016, Match 2 Review: Smith and Jason Mohammed shine in a dramatic chase
Guyana Amazon Warriors registered their first win of the season against St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 4 wickets in the second match of the Carribean Premier League (CPL). Chasing 165, the Guyana openers Dwayne Smith and Martin Guptill gave them a great start as the duo put on 62 runs inside the powerplay.
Guptill scored a 16-ball 22 and Smith anchored the innings with a 36-ball 62. After the good start, they lost wickets at regular intervals but the 29-year old Jason Mohammed played a matured innings and saw his team home with an unbeaten 42 runs off 29 balls.
Carlos Brathwaite of Patriots was the one who dismissed Guptill and Chris Barnwell to get the match back in balance as it went all the way down the wire. It was 20 needed from the last two overs and 7 from the last over. 7 from the last over seemed like a cake walk for the batsmen, but Santokie gave just one run off the first three balls to have the spectators at the edge of their seats.
Mohammed held his nerve and smashed the next two balls for a boundary and a couple to register the win with a ball remaining. Smith was adjudged as the man of the match for his scintillating innings.
Earlier, it was Guyana who won the toss and put the opposition into bat first. Patriots lost Lendl Simmons for a duck in the very first over of Sohail Tanvir. The skipper of the side, Faf du Plessis scored 30 after both the openers were dismissed for single digits. Jonathan Carter, who came at no.4 was run out by Barnwell with him adding just 1 run to the total.
Brad Hodge and Devon Thomas added 38-runs each from 32 balls and 18 balls respectively and Thisara Perera gave the late flourish of a 12-ball 20 but was expensive with the ball later in the day as he conceded 51 runs off his 4 overs. Sohail Tanvir picked up 4 wickets for 20 and the Australian young leg-spinner Adam Zampa bagged 3 wickets.
