CPL 2019: 5 lesser-known batsmen who can be useful picks in IPL 2020

The Caribbean Premier League 2019 has thrown up some bright talents, both in the bowling and batting departments. The West Indies are the defending T20 World Cup champions and the CPL has been a breeding ground of a number of bright prospects. The ongoing season has been no different and features a number of cricketers, who can make a name for themselves at the highest level. In the meantime, other T20 leagues from across the globe will be keeping a close eye on the event, one of them is the Indian Premier League (IPL). The auction for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league is scheduled to take place on December 19. There could be a number of new batsmen in the CPL, who could find a place in the auction and later go on and wreak havoc in the IPL. Here are we look at five batters in CPL 2019, who can be more than handy picks in IPL 2020 Brandon King Brandon King. And it won’t spring a surprise if he gets picked in the West Indies national team in the near future. He made his debut in the format in 2017, but this season has seen him putting forth his absolute best. He is among the leading run-scorers of the tournament, having notched 453 runs from the first 11 games at an average of 56.62. The Jamaica-born has racked up those runs at a strike-rate of 151 and has given his team, Guyana Amazon Warriors, flying starts on most occasions. King was at his very best in the Qualifier 1 against the Barbados Tridents at the Providence Stadium. He scored 132 off 72 balls with 10 boundaries and 11 sixes. It helped the Warriors score 218 and win the encounter by 30 runs to progress to the final. Glenn Phillips Glenn Phillips. Albeit he couldn’t shine in his maiden outing for the team, in the last two seasons, he has carved a reputation as one of the Tallawahs’ most reliable and consistent batters at the top. After becoming their leading run-getter last season in 2018, the New Zealander performed exceptionally for them even in 2019. Scoring 374 runs in 10 matches at an average of 37.40, he was in rhythm. But unlike the last time, he didn’t get much support from his fellow batsmen owing to which Jamaica finished with only two wins in the league stage. Barring the first two games, he got runs in every other match. His top score of 87 came versus the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at the Sabina Park and it was in a losing cause. He is more known for his bowling in first-class cricket. However, in T20 cricket, his power-hitting prowess came to the fore, especially in the CPL 2019 where he represented the St Lucia Zouks. It can be said that the Daren Sammy-led unit depended heavily on him. In 10 matches, Cornwall was their leading run-scorer with 254 runs at an average of 25.40. The Antigua-born was slotted in the middle order a couple of times, but his failure there meant that he was given back his opening position. The hulk-like figure notched those runs at a strike-rate of 190.57. With the ball, the 26-year-old got only one wicket, but can be useful on slow and low decks. Chandrapaul Hemraj Chandrapaul Hemraj. (Photo by Ashley Allen – CPL T20/Getty Images) Even as Brandon King has been the more dominant partner in the Warriors’ lineup, Chandrapaul Hemraj hasn’t missed out on displaying his abilities as well. The southpaw got to play only two matches last season after making his debut for the St Lucia Stars. However, the Warriors’ have made his optimum utilization and that has paid dividends. In 11 matches, he has scored 298 runs at 27.09. The 26-year-old has gotten those runs at a strike-rate of 123.14, giving good support to King. He has two T20 half-centuries to his name with a top score of 66 against the Trinbago Knight Riders at the Queen’s Park. Hemraj is no mug with the ball either. On a few instances, he has been entrusted to bowl in the powerplay and he has delivered, having picked up five wickets at an economy of 6.61. Fabian Allen Fabian Allen. (Photo by Randy Brooks – CPL T20/Getty Images) Fabian Allen made his T20 debut back in 2017, but it was only in 2018 that he managed to grab the limelight to some extent. In one of the league games against the Barbados Tridents, he got 64 off 34 balls, representing the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. However, he was used more judiciously by his skipper Carlos Brathwaite. Allen mostly came during the death overs of an inning and weaved magic. Allen is one of those batsmen, who can find the middle of the bat from the outset and that makes him a special talent. In 11 matches of CPL 2019, the right-hander piled on 218 runs at an average of 27.25 with a solitary half-century. Most importantly, the swashbuckling batter got those runs at a strike-rate of 177.23. Allen has also shown that he can restrict the batters, bowling in the powerplay.
