CPL 2019: Barbados Tridents name Windies skipper Jason Holder as marquee player
The Barbados-based franchise has new ownership now after the United States-based CMG Companies acquired it.
He has been assigned with a big task of leading the Windies in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. However, Jason Holder has found an added responsibility on his shoulders as he is named as the marquee player for Barbados Tridents in the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) starting September 4. The Barbados-based franchise has new ownership now after the United States-based CMG Companies acquired it.
The Tridents had won the 2014 edition of the CPL, beating Guyana Amazon Warriors in a narrow game under the leadership of Kieron Pollard. The very next year, they failed to defend the title as they lost to Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel in the final. Holder took over as the captain of the Tridents in the 2018 season from Pollard after he missed the edition before owing to the Windies’ tour of England.
Holder though had a poor run as the captain as the Tridents finished at the bottom of the points table with only two wins out of 10 games. Holder has played in 87 T20Is with 656 runs and 63 wickets. He though has played only 11 T20Is, scoring 60 runs and taking nine wickets. Coming back to the new ownership of the Tridents, the CMG Companies have been ecstatic.
“Selling our ownership rights of the winning Jamaica Tallawahs held from 2014-2016 was the right move for us as a business, but we missed being involved in the Region and in CPL. When the chance to purchase the Tridents came along we were delighted, especially with the opportunity to bring good strong local partners onboard,” Manish Patel, Principal of CMG, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
CMG has ventured into sporting discipline now
CMG Companies has investors – local and international – and operates franchise restaurants, hotels and real estate. It has also ventured into the sporting discipline and even has sponsorship deals with NBA teams. As understood from Patel’s remark, it also had the ownership of Jamaica Tallawahs in the past.
“We can’t wait to get started at enhancing the profile of this team on and off the field and to bringing a comprehensive sports entertainment package to Barbados. We will work very hard to make Barbadians proud of their team,” Patel further said.
