The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is still some months away but Guayana Amazon Warriors have already signed in wicket-keeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran as their marquee player for the upcoming season. Last year, the 23-year-old Trinidadian had played for Barbados Tridents but will be playing for a new franchise this year. The CPL 2019 will be kicking off on September 4 and continue till October 12.
Pooran played in seven games in IPL 2019
Pooran, who recently featured for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 and played seven games with the highest score of 48, has played 11 T20Is and one ODI for the West Indies. The picture of Mahendra Singh Dhoni demonstrating the nuances of wicket-keeping in front of Pooran after a game between Punjab and Chennai in the recent IPL remains a notable one.
Pooran is already a busy traveller across the world to play in T20 tournaments and has also been picked for the Caribbean squad for the ICC World Cup starting May 31. In the six-team CPL, the Warriors will be Pooran’s third since he started with the Trinbago Knight Riders before shifting base to the Tridents. The remaining squad for the Amazon Warriors, who have made the finals of the CPL sour out of six times (it started in 2013) but lost all of them, will be unveiled at the player draft ceremony on May 22.
“Pooran is amongst the very best T20 batting talents in the world and we wanted to bring him into our team as we push to go one better than last year where we finished as runners-up. He is explosive and exciting, and we are very pleased to be able to have such an impressive young talent representing the Guyana Amazon Warriors this year,” Omar Khan, Amazon Warriors Team Operations Manager, was quoted as saying in a report on CPL website.
Pooran made his international debut against Pakistan in a T20I in Dubai in September 2016 but has played in only 11 games so far, scoring 218 runs at an average of 24.22 and strike rate of 140 plus. In the only ODI he played against England in Bridgetown in February though, he fell for a duck.
