CPL 2020: 5 transfers that could prove costly for teams

The 2020 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to get underway on Tuesday, August 18 with the final to take place on Thursday, September 10. The tournament will be played at two venues in Trinidad- The Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba and the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. The games will be played behind closed doors bearing in mind the massive coronavirus pandemic. The drafts took place last month and a number of players were picked. Even as some of the players remained with their old franchise, a few of them found brand-new teams as well. In the meantime, some teams might end up regretting a few decisions, after discontinuing their association with a few of their old players. The below-mentioned players have tasted decent success in T20 cricket and in the CPL. Here are five transfers teams might end up regretting: – 1. Carlos Brathwaite- Jamaica Tallawahs Carlos Brathwaite. (Photo Source: Getty Images) St Kitts Nevis Patriots earlier decided to release Carlos Brathwaite, who led them last time. Rayad Emrit, who has prior experience of leadership, has been appointed as their skipper. Emrit played for the Patriots itself last season. As far as Carlos is concerned, he will be turning out for the Jamaica Tallawahs. His departure is expected to leave a massive void in the Patriots camp without a doubt. In last year’s CPL, he didn’t score a whole lot of runs, but showed his potential in the match against Trinbago Knight Riders during the league stage. He helped the Patriots tie the game, scoring nearly 20 runs off James Neesham. Thereafter in the Super Over, he hit Ali Khan. The current Patriots’ squad looks a tad thin on batting, especially in the middle order. Not to forget his utility with the ball. 2. Fawad Ahmed- Trinbago Knight Riders Fawad Ahmed. (Photo by Ashley Allen – CPL T20/Getty Images) After picking 22 wickets from 13 matches in CPL 2018, eyebrows were furrowed when the Knight Riders released Fawad Ahmed. The St Lucia Zouks roped him in and he turned out to be their most frugal bowler with an economy of 6.41 apart from picking up 10 wickets. However, despite the performances, the St Lucia franchise didn’t persist with the leggie, something surprising as well. Fawad has arguably been one of the best leg-spinners in the CPL, at least in the last few seasons. The Knights will be mightily pleased to have Fawad back into their mix. For the Zouks, they have replaced Ahmed with Afghanistan’s Zahir Khan Pakteen, but whether he is equally effective or not, remains to be seen. Veteran Mohammad Nabi is the other genuine spin-bowling option in the Zouks’ lineup. 3. Chris Lynn- St Kitts and Nevis Patriots Chris Lynn. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Chris Lynn isn’t someone to die wondering and likes to play his strokes from the word go. Though he takes the cautious route at times, he can take down the best of bowling attacks when in full flow. The Queenslander was a part of the Knight Riders in their winning campaigns in 2017 and 2018, scoring tons of runs. However, Kieron Pollard’s TKR let him go despite the impressive shows. In 31 CPL matches, Lynn has 742 runs at an average of 27.48, striking at a decent 131.56, numbers which aren’t meek by any stretch of the imagination. He didn’t play for TKR in the previous season though. Lynn will now be honing his skills for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. However, he would be playing in Trinidad where he has played quite a significant amount of cricket over the years. 4. Zahir Khan Pakteen- St Lucia Zouks Zahir Khan. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Jamaica Tallawahs performed miserably last time around and couldn’t qualify for the playoffs. Their shoddy bowling didn’t help their cause by any means. However, amidst the poor show, they had a talented Chinaman by the name of Zahir Khan Pakteen. The Afghanistan spinner bowled at an economy of 7.66 and also picked up eight wickets, second only to Oshane Thomas’ tally of nine. But the Tallawahs didn’t retain him for the upcoming season. Instead they roped in Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Sandeep Lamichhane. Even as the new recruits are effective, Zahir would have brought in the X-factor since he is a Chinaman. The Young Turk will now be turning out for Daren Sammy’s St Lucia Zouks, who have flattered to deceive in all the previous editions of the T20 tournament. 5. Denesh Ramdin- St Kitts and Nevis Patriots Denesh Ramdin of Trinbago Knight Riders. (Photo by Randy Brooks – CPL T20 via Getty Images) Denesh Ramdin has been plying his trade in the CPL since 2013 and is a seasoned campaigner. In 76 matches, the wicketkeeper has 1,273 runs at a decent average of 31.82. Though he isn’t known for playing the booming shots, Ramdin has managed a strike-rate of 121.70, numbers which are reasonable in the shortest format. He has played in quite a few seasons for the Knight Riders. In the previous season, he got 190 runs with an unbeaten half-century. Nevertheless, the Knights didn’t persist with him and rather, they roped in New Zealand’s Tim Seifert. Even as Seifert is a talented lot, there’s no substitute for experience. The Trinidad-born Ramdin is set to turn out for the Patriots next time around. The veteran is 35 years old and has even played international cricket in the last 12 months.
