5 players who can succeed Aaron Finch as Australia ODI skipper

Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from ODIs and will continue leading the side in the shortest format. The 35-year-old was in the midst of a dismal run in the ODI format. In his last seven outings, the Victoria-born had only managed to score 26 runs. The veteran batter would be hanging his boots after the final match of the ongoing series against New Zealand on Sunday (September 11). Cricket Australia will now need to decide on who can be the next successor for the role. With the 50-over World Cup slated to be played next year, there will be some pondering as to who is an ideal fit to lead Australia in the build-up to the marquee event. Let us look at players who could succeed Aaron Finch as Australia's ODI skipper 1. Pat Cummins Pat Cummins was entrusted to drive the chariot of Australian cricket in the longest format when Tim Paine stepped down from captaincy last year. He had also been vice-captain of the side in white-ball format and thus could ascend to the role of full-time ODI captain. Cummins is arguably among the best bowlers in the world across formats. The speedster who has shown his mettle on the cricket field as a bowler has left no stone unturned as far as captainship is concerned. Under Cummins's reign, Australia crushed England to retain the Ashes and then registered a historic series win in Pakistan. The veteran pacer has not let the captaincy take a toll on his bowling as he still was the highest wicket-taker in the Ashes 2021-22. He has been highly praised for his leadership skills and could be in line to become the next ODI captain. 2. Alex Carey Alex Carey is a constant figure in Australia’s 50-overs setup. He is the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper and is seen as a natural-born leader. He is seen as one of the front-runners to succeed Finch as the national team’s next ODI skipper. The 31-year-old has experience leading Australia in the ODIs. In the 50-overs series against the West Indies last year, when Finch got injured and regular vice-captain Cummins was also absent, Carey was handed over the mantle to lead Australia. Carey did an exceptional job back then to lead his side to a series win. The wicketkeeper-batter might be Australia’s long-term prospect as a leader. With the regular vice-captain Cummins being rested during tours to manage his workload, the southpaw could be given the reins in the ODI format on a full-time basis. 3. Steve Smith Steve Smith was Australia’s all-format captain until the ball-tampering saga took place. He was not looked at as a captaincy option when he returned from a year ban but that incident is long gone now. Also, Cricket Australia seems to have moved on from that debacle. This is evident from the fact that Australia named Smith as Cummins’s deputy and the ace-batter then went on to lead the Aussies in the second Ashes Test when the veteran pacer was out due to Covid. Smith’s captaincy credentials have never been in doubt and the 33-year-old is still Australia's key figure in the side. So with Finch’s ODI retirement, Smith could become the next limited-overs captain of Australia. 4. David Warner David Warner has been a giant in the limited-overs circuit. He has been making heaps of runs for his national side and also in franchise cricket. Apart from his batting prowess, he has a decent resume as far as captaincy goes. The 35-year-old was instrumental in making Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) a successful franchise. Under his reign, SRH won their first and only IPL title in 2016. In the international circuit, the veteran batter was the Australian team’s vice-captain until the ball-tampering fiasco. Warner is one of the most experienced members in the Australian setup and has considerable experience in leading a side. The southpaw has a strong case to become Australia's next ODI skipper in the build-up to the 50-overs World Cup in 2023. 5. Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell has been a constant figure in Australia’s limited-overs setup. He has been representing his national side for ten years and is part of their leadership group in white-ball format. The veteran all-rounder is not new to captaincy having earlier led the BBL franchise Melbourne Stars. Also, Maxwell’s leadership skills have been on display during his stint at the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as he is constantly seen talking and mentoring youngsters on the field. Maxwell is arguably among the best all-rounders in white-ball cricket. The right-hand batter's place in the batting line-up is a no-brainer and given his decent leadership credentials, Cricket Australia could look to make him their next ODI captain.
