The biggest spectacle of cricket, the Indian Premier League, is back for its 17th edition. Ten teams gunning for the ultimate prize after giving it their all over two months is a sight to behold for the viewers. The hype for the cash-rich league starts as soon as the year changes.
Over the years, Chennai Super Kings have become a dominant force in the Indian Premier League. Kits and jerseys are something that fans look forward to every year they look to purchase the apparel ahead of the new season. The franchises try to be unique with their jersey and give the fans something worth buying. Let’s take a look at the evolution of jerseys for the Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural edition of the league in 2008.
1. 2008
Everyone is reminiscent of the iconic yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings. One of the most loved sights of the jersey was the presence of a lion at the front end. It showed the mentality and confidence of the franchise in the team. The blue and red lines at the side were also a blissful sight for the fans.
Considering the kind of players that were going to play for the franchise, many brands would surely have loved to have their names on the jersey. The 2008 jersey had three major sponsors namely Aircel, Reebok, and Coromandel King. It was considered to be one of the most stylish jerseys in the league that year.
2. 2009
The Chennai Super Kings franchise is known for not chopping and changing things quite so easily. The same approach might have been followed for their jersey as they went for the same design and style for the kit ahead of the second season. However, they were able to add another sponsor to their jersey in one of the changes. Nivaran 90, was added to the right side of the jersey before the 2009 season.
Chennai Super Kings were once again able to qualify for the knock-out stages of the tournament for the second successive year. However, this time they failed to make it to the final as they faced defeat in the semi-final stage of the competition.
3. 2010
This year as well, the franchise opted against changing the jersey and continued with the same design for the 3rd edition of the Indian Premier League. The only change was the addition of the sponsor, Coromandel King from the back of the jersey to the front. It was now visible on the right side of the kit. They added India Cements as their sponsor for the very first time this season.
The year 2010 was the first time Chennai Super Kings lifted the coveted Indian Premier League trophy. After failing to seize the crucial moments in the past two seasons, the MS-Dhoni-led side were able to breeze past Mumbai Indians in the final of the tournament held at the DY Patil stadium.
4. 2011
The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings were at it again in the Indian Premier League looking to defend their crown. The franchise, however, went with the same approach of not chopping and changing the jersey.
The only change they made was with the sponsors and the area of the jersey in which their brand would be displayed. Commonadel King and Rebook could be seen on the right-hand sleeve of the jersey. Meanwhile, Gulf, which was the new sponsor for the franchise marked its area at the right part of the jersey. Aircel has been represented twice in the jersey with one logo at the left sleeve area and the other around the chest region.

5. 2012
Chennai Super Kings were coming to the 5th edition of the Indian Premier League brimming with confidence. They became the first team in history to have defended their IPL crown. Not to anyone’s surprise, the two-time champions did not make any major changes to their kit.
It was once again the addition and removal of the sponsors which was the major thing in their kit. The franchise was able to secure a new sponsor instead of Reebok as they roped in Life OK. Their full logo could be seen on the right sleeve of the kit. The team also did a campaign to save the tigers in the country. They added the logo to the left-hand sleeve above the Aircel logo.
6. 2013
Similar to previous seasons of the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings franchise opted against changing the design and style of the jersey. The only change was once again the change of the sponsors. VGN and Nissan were the two new sponsors of the Chennai Super Kings franchise. Both of them were given the right sleeve portion of the kit for this season. Commondel King was given the left sleeve area of the Chennai Super Kings jersey this year.
The Chennai-based franchise had a decent run in the Indian Premier League as they once again reached the final of the competition. However, this time around they were at the wrong end of the scoreboard, since they faced defeat to the Mumbai Indians in the final.
7. 2014
MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings were ready once again for the 7th edition of the Indian Premier League. The jersey as usual did not have any major differences from the one revealed in the previous season. However, there was surely another sponsor that was added to the sleeve as ADL Orbit Cables joined the franchise as a sponsor.
Chennai Super Kings continued their epic form in the Indian Premier League. They maintained their record of qualifying for the playoffs in every season. This time, Punjab Kings overcame the two-time champions as they were not able to meet the massive target set during the Qualifier 2 of the tournament.
8. 2015
Chennai Super Kings kept their traditional design and style once again as they focused on small changes to the kit. One new sponsor was added as the franchise struck a deal with UST Global for the season. Their logo was added to the sleeve of the kit.
This was the last season for the Chennai Super Kings before their 2-year ban from the league. They had a splendid season as they were able to reach the finals of the competition once again. However, they encountered the Mumbai Indians, who triumphed in the final as they defeated CSK convincingly.
9. 2018
A lot was expected from the Chennai Super Kings when they came back to the Indian Premier League. They delivered for their fans with a fresh jersey and its vibrant yellow colors signalling the return of the franchise. They kept the core of the jersey intact with the lion symbol near the left side.
Some of the old brands were still there with the franchise as their sponsor. India Cements again continued as their logo was kept at the back of the jersey. There was a new group of main sponsors as the Muthoot Group partnered with the two-time winners. It was a perfect comeback for the team as they lifted the trophy at the end of the season.
10. 2019
After their amazing run in the previous season, Chennai Super Kings went with their trusted method of keeping the same jersey without making any changes. For the first time, all the sponsors remained the same and the franchise did not make any position changes as well to the jersey.
It was yet another scintillating season for the Chennai-based franchise as they looked on course to win a title. However, like the 2013 and 2015 seasons, they ended up losing to the Mumbai Indians in the finals of the tournament.
11. 2020
The COVID-era brought out some new measures for every team in the Indian Premier League. But that did not mean that it would change the dynamics of the Chennai Super Kings jersey. Once again, it was the same jersey from last year with less to no changes in any of the styles or designs.
On the field, this was one of the side’s worst campaigns as they finished near the bottom of the Indian Premier League standings. They ended the campaign in 7th position only ahead of inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals.
12. 2021
For the first time, Chennai Super Kings made some changes to the design of the jersey. They opted out of the red and blue stripes on the jersey which could be seen since the inaugural edition of the league. The franchise decided to go for the camouflage design around the shoulder area. The management decided to include five stars around the left-hand shoulder to signify the five titles that the team had lifted till then.
The iconic lion symbol which was ever-present in the CSK jersey so far had been removed. The franchise added fashion brand, Myntra, to their sponsors list. The brand’s logo was visible around the chest area of the jersey. The franchise had a great run in 2021 as they went on to lift their fourth IPL title.
13. 2022
The four-time winners were on the hunt for their fifth title ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. They didn’t make any significant changes to the kit altogether but added some key elements. The four trophies on the left side now indicate the number of times the franchise has lifted the coveted trophy.
During the jersey launch event of the franchise, the CSK CEO revealed the small changes made to the jersey. The much-loved camouflage design would now also be visible around the collar and back side of the jersey. There was a change in the sponsor as well since the franchise collaborated with TVS Eurogrip for the season. Their logo can be seen near the chest and the stomach region of the jersey.

14. 2023
After one of their worst finishes in the history of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings stood by the same design for the 16th edition. The only slight change was the black stripes near the stomach and chest region being pushed firmly to the side of the jersey. Apart from that everything about the jersey remained the same.
Chennai Super Kings went on to have one of their most successful Indian Premier League campaigns in history as they became the joint-most IPL titles in history alongside Mumbai Indians. It was an iconic final in Ahmedabad as Ravindra Jadeja clinched the victory from the jaws of defeat against Gujarat Titans.
15. 2024
The five-time champions get into the 17th season with a new sponsor at the back. Etihad Airways, the UAE-based airline company has been roped in by CSK to be their official sponsor. Dhoni and Co. will don the airline name on the back of their jersey for the 2024 season. Small in size but immensely significant nonetheless, a star has been added to the crest signifying 2023's victorious campaign. The rest of the jersey is similar to last year's.
