IPL 2023: 5 all-rounders CSK can target in trading window to replace Ravindra Jadeja

The rift between Ravindra Jadeja and Chennai Super Kings seemed to have grown in the past few months. This could result in the veteran all-rounder getting released or traded to the other team in the upcoming trading window which is reported to get open in November or December. The trading window would be a great opportunity for the Chennai franchise to fill the spot that will be vacated by Jadeja. The Indian cricketer is among the best all-rounders in the game and has been a top finisher for the franchise. The spot will be tough to fill but there are certain players who could fit the bill. Let us look at some- Quality all-rounders whom CSK could target to replace Ravindra Jadeja 1. Krunal Pandya Lucknow Super Giants bought Krunal Pandya to provide balance to the side. The southpaw had a decent campaign with the ball taking 10 wickets at an economy of 8.25. However, the all-rounder failed to have an impact with the bat and could accumulate only 183 runs at a mediocre strike rate of 126.21. Lucknow would have hoped more from him and this is where lies the opportunity for CSK. Krunal is a like-for-like replacement for Jadeja and can bowl in different phases of the game. A player-to-player trade can be on the cards between the southpaws. LSG would be eager to rope in the veteran cricketer on their side who is a proven finisher. CSK on the other hand could fill the Jadeja void with a quality all-rounder like Krunal. 2. Shahbaz Ahmed The Chennai franchise could look to rope in Shahbaz Ahmed in the upcoming trading window. The all-rounder has shown a lot of promise in the T20 circuit of late and was recently drafted into the Indian squad for the Zimbabwe tour. The 27-year-old offers the same skillset as Jadeja and he could be one of the long-term prospects for the Men in Yellow. Shahbaz’s recent team Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB), on the other hand, can agree to trade him for the veteran Indian all-rounder. The Haryana-born had a decent outing with the bat last season scoring 219 runs at a strike rate of 120.9 but he had a poor season with the ball. He took four wickets in 16 outings at an economy of 9.60. RCB would have expected more from the Bengal cricketer and Jadeja could be a great fit in the lower order. He is a proven finisher and a gun all-rounder. Moreover, the veteran player’s inclusion will lessen the dependency on Dinesh Karthik to finish games. 3. Washington Sundar The Yellow army could look to buy Washington Sundar at an expense of their former skipper. Sundar is one of the promising all-rounders in the Indian T20 circuit. He is quite consistent with the ball and can bowl at different phases of the game. His batting credentials have also seen an upsurge of late. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) would be quite eager to rope in Jadeja. The franchise bought Sundar to fill the void of an all-rounder who could finish games batting at 7. However, Sundar did not have the expected impact with the bat the team would have hoped for. Added to that, he has been plagued by injuries more often than not. Both franchises could benefit from a Jadeja-Sundar trade. Moreover, the 22-year-old playing for CSK would mean a Chennai-born international star playing for the franchise. This could add to the rationality behind going after the young all-rounder. 4. Shardul Thakur The Chennai franchise has been quite big on player loyalty and fans have seen the management trying to get back ex-CSK players to their side. Shardul Thakur had been a core member of the franchise until he was bought by Delhi Capitals in this year’s Mega Auction. Shardul has been a middle-overs enforcer for the Men in Yellow and has provided handy contributions with the bat. The Chennai franchise could likely look to rope in the bowling all-rounder at the expense of Jadeja. The 30-year-old had a mediocre campaign in the 2022 season where he featured in 14 games and took 15 wickets at a high economy of 9.79. With the bat, he scored 120 runs at an economy of 137.93. The Palghar-born cricketer could not perform as per his standards. They could look to let go of the pacer and rope in Jadeja who could play as a floater and can finish games. This would lessen the burden on a top-heavy DC side. Moreover, the Capitals already have the services of Khaleel Ahmed, Chetan Sakariya, and Kamlesh Nagarkoti in the bowling department so it will be a win-win for both teams. 5. James Neesham The Dhoni-led franchise could look to rope in New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham in place of Jadeja. The 31-year-old is a proven performer in the T20I circuit. In his 48 outings for New Zealand, he has scored 607 runs at an outstanding strike rate of 165.84. Neesham can add the much-needed firepower to the Chennai-lower order and could very well play the role of a designated finisher. He is more than handy with the bowl and can operate at any phase of the game. Rajasthan Royals could not use him much in their star studded-line up and with Shimron Hetmyer acing the role of a finisher, Neesham was not given a long rope. Neesham got two games for RR but he was not able to have much impact on the game. The Chennai franchise could go for a player-to-money trade for Neesham.
