IPL 2023: 5 overseas players who might go unsold in mini-auction

This year’s December will be hot for cricket fans as they will witness a fantastic IPL Auction, in which 405 players will participate to go under the hammer. Among these names, there are 132 foreign cricketers, in which players such as Ben Stokes, Cameron Green, Sam Curran, and Adil Rashid might attract huge bids from the franchises. On the other hand, there are also some overseas players who could get the cold shoulder too. In the auction, the franchises will come up with a fixed amount in their auction purses and noticing that, it could be said that they will consider players with big reputation first. However, some foreign players despite playing in the tournament, in the past, could get ignored by the franchises due to their poor track record in the tournament. 5 overseas players who might get ignored in the forthcoming IPL mini-auction 5. D’Arcy Short The Australian cricketer D’Arcy Short has submitted his name for the upcoming auction and his price will be INR 75 lakhs. Playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2018 season of the IPL, Short delivered underwhelming displays. With the bat, the left-handed batter could muster only 115 runs and one wicket in seven games. In international cricket too, he looked unimpressive for the Australian team in T20Is played between 2018 to 2020. With just 642 runs in 23 T20Is at an ordinary batting average of 30.57, he failed to leave any impact on the national team to become a regular member. Looking at his international T20I numbers and past record in the cash-rich league, it’s almost likely that he might face a snub from the franchises. On the other hand, the presence of Sikandar Raza and Shakib Al Hasan could also spoil his chances of getting acquired in the auction, as these two players are more reliable for their all-round skills as compared to him. 4. Craig Overton The England all-rounder Craig Overton has registered himself for the forthcoming auction at his base price of INR 2 crores. In international cricket, playing 15 matches for his national side, which includes both ODIs and Tests, he has gained some experience. However, due to his hefty price bracket, he might not attract any buyers at the mini-auction. The 28-year-old is yet to make his T20I debut for England, and this fact may also give one more reason to the franchise owners to be away from him. Although he had a few decent outings in England’s Vitality T20 Blast, the Englishman may not get sold in the auction. At his base price, the franchises would like to invest in experienced and renowned all-rounders such as Moises Henriques and Jason Holder. 3. Shai Hope The West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope will look to make his IPL debut this year. But due to his sub-par batting displays in T20Is for the Caribbean team, he may not grab the eyes of the franchise owners in the mini-auction. The left-handed batter in 19 T20I appearances has smashed only 304 runs with two half-centuries at a miserable average of 17.88. This year, playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League, he played some fine knocks with his bat. However, those innings won't make him credible enough to become a part of any franchises in the IPL, which is much more competitive than CPL. The 29-year-old West Indies cricketer will face stern competition from other wicketkeepers too in the auction. With the participation of Phil Salt, Nicholas Pooran, Heinrich Klaasen, Litton Das, and Kusal Medis, he may not be the best option for the franchises to choose among wicketkeeper-batters. 2. Tom Latham Tom Latham has been providing his services to the New Zealand cricket team for the last ten years, but so far, he hasn’t got a chance to play in the IPL. Back in 2018, he took part in the mega auction but no franchise showed interest in him. After four years, he is trying his luck again while registering himself for the mini-auction 2023. Going through his records for his national side, it could be said that he has reliable figures in ODIs. But, speaking of his statistics in T20Is, the 30-year-old New Zealand cricketer might not be considered an ideal batter in the given format. With these circumstances, the franchises may show reluctance in investing money in Latham. As some other trending wicketkeepers such as Phil Salt, Nicholas Pooran, and Heinrich Klaasen have also signed up for the auction, the franchises may not prefer him over them as these cricketers are actively playing in shortest format for quite some time. 1. Angelo Mathews Angelo Mathews played in the IPL from 2009 to 2017 and during that period, he was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Pune Warriors India (PWI), and Delhi Capitals (DC). Going through his experience and all-round skills, he could be a valuable addition to any team. However, the veteran might not find a team due to his heavy base price of INR 2 crores. Another fact that hampers the chances of him getting sold is his absence from the league and T20Is for a long time. The Sri Lanka all-rounder was last seen in Sri Lanka jersey in T20Is on March 7, 2021. Although he plays in the Lanka Premier League, it won’t be enough to earn him an IPL contract. Speaking of his competition at the event, Jimmy Neesham and Jason holder might be considered better than him as both cricketers have played a lot of T20 cricket in the last two years. In the 2019 mini-auction, he listed his name to participate in the league, but no one picked him up. That time too, his base price was INR 2 crores.
