But the David Warner-led side is not to be underestimated, as they’re coming off a magnificent victory in their previous game against the Punjab Kings. Delhi jeopardized Punjab’s playoff chances by defeating them in Dharamsala in their recent match-up and hence would be aiming to pull off a similar act against CSK as well. Therefore, MS Dhoni and Co. will have to bring their best game.

Let’s look at Chennai Super Kings’ probable playing XI against Delhi Capitals for the 61st game of IPL 2023

Openers: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway

Ruturaj Gaikwad has had a troublesome season this year as he has managed to accumulate 425 runs this year in 12 innings, at an average of 38.64. Throughout the season, he has managed to score just two half-centuries and has not managed to provide the team with an ideal start. In the upcoming game, he will try to turn the tables around in his favor.

Devon Conway has been one of the most dependable batters for CSK this year. He has provided the side with some fantastic starts and has also played some match-winning knocks. Conway wasn’t at his best when the two sides last met this season at Chepauk but will aim to do good in the reverse fixture.

Middle-order: Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube

Ajinkya Rahane’s start to the season was terrific, but the senior batter has looked a tad bit off in the recent few games. His last good knock came against the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he notched up 71* at the Eden Gardens and took his side to a win. Nevertheless, his batting exploits in the middle will be crucial for the team.

Ambati Rayudu has been backed immensely by the skipper and the management this season. Even after a string of poor outings, the senior pro showed a glimpse of his former self when CSK met DC in Chennai. Though Rayudu’s stay on the field was shortened by Khaleel Ahmed, he managed to score 23 runs off 17 deliveries, notching up one four and a humungous six.

Shivam Dube has been the pick of the batters this season, alongside Conway. In CSK’s most recent game against KKR at home, Dube’s composed innings kept the team’s hopes alive till a point in time, in the game. But his unbeaten 48 went in vain as Kolkata clinched a victory and extended CSK’s wait of qualifying for the playoffs.

All-rounders: Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk)

Moeen Ali has been good on the bowling front this year, as his struggle in the batting department has continued to exist. The England all-rounder hasn’t found the right momentum with the bat, which has been a bit troublesome for CSK in the middle overs.

Ravindra Jadeja has managed to stand up to the role of an all-rounder. He has scored the crucial runs towards the end of the innings whenever needed and has also been among the wickets. He has picked up 16 wickets in the tournament so far and would look to keep the momentum going.

MS Dhoni has been his true self this season. Coming in to bat towards the fag end of the game, notching up the big runs to take the side to a respectable total, and managing the game from behind the stumps, he has been a mastermind. He would hope for all other batters to do well and score a big total, and get the best out of the bowlers to restrict the opposition.

Bowlers: Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana

Deepak Chahar has shown his prowess in the game by picking up wickets in the powerplay. In the past three games, he has picked up seven wickets, all of which came in the powerplay. Hence, CSK will be relying on his experience with the new ball and would be expecting him to get the crucial breakthroughs in the starting phase.

Tushar Deshpande has improved immensely over time, and is a wicket-taking bowler in the team. He still needs to maintain line and length so as to restrict giving away extras, but his aim will be to pick wickets and keep his side on the driver’s seat.

Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lankan bowling duo have impressed this time. Pathirana has been at his best this year and has carried the pressure in the death overs really well. He is a dependable bowlers in the side, and will be aiming to make the most by joining hands with Deepak Chahar.
