IPL 2024: 3 Changes Mumbai Indians should make to get back to winning ways
Mumbai Indians slump to their third successive defeat of the IPL 2024 season as Rajasthan Royals romp home to a six-wicket win.
Mumbai Indians (MI) saw their horrendous start to the season continue during the match no. 14 of the IPL 2024. On Monday, the five-time winners lost their third game in a row to Rajasthan Royals. This was the third win on the trot for Sanju Samson-led team.
Put into bat first, Mumbai Indians could manage only 125/9 from their 20 overs. At one stage, the home team were floundering at 20/4, thanks to the damage caused by Trent Boult and Nandre Burger. Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma added 56 runs for the fifth wicket, but it wasn’t enough.
Riyan Parag (54*) smashed yet another half-century to showcase his rising stocks in cricketing circle. The youngster saw his team through to win the game by six wickets and go top of the IPL 2024 table.
Here are the three changes Mumbai Indians need to make ahead of their next game against Delhi Capitals
3. Time to draft in Nuwan Thushara for Kwena Maphaka
Young South African Kwena Maphaka has found going tough in the IPL 2024 season. In his debut match, he was carted for 66 runs from his 4 overs. Against RR, he got the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal but didn’t make any further impact with the ball.
Sri Lankan star Nuwan Thushara is waiting for his turn to make his IPL debut. The 29-year-old is in good form, as he had just picked a hat trick during the T20I series against Bangladesh. The inclusion of the Lankan pacer will also give Mumbai the much-needed depth to their bowling unit. Thus, replacing Thushara in place of Maphaka will be ideal for MI.
2. Need to push Tim David up in the batting order
The ideal batting position for Australian star Tim David is the number five position. Kieron Pollard used to play in that role for Mumbai Indians and used to do a very good job. If David too can bat at number 5, he will better be able to assess the match situation and play accordingly.
In each of the three games, Tim David has batted lower down the order. This move will also help Hardik Pandya to bat at six and play the role of a finisher, like he has done previously for the franchise. Mumbai Indians' batting looks devoid of flexibility, and this could be an ideal move for the team.
1. Better utilization of Jasprit Bumrah
Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been of the best bowlers for his side this year. The 30-year-old took the new ball on Monday and there seemed to be a huge spring in the step from his tea,
Rohit Sharma has used Jasprit Bumrah the best during his captaincy of the team. After bowling with the new ball for three overs, Bumrah was nearly a bystander for the rest of the innings. With Riyan Parag going great guns Pandya could have saved at least two more overs of Bumrah for the 2nd half of the innings.
