IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for playoffs after LSG's win over CSK?

In the 39th match of the Indian Premier League 2024, Chennai Super Kings took on Lucknow Super Giants. The two teams faced off last week itself with the latter taking home the two points in the previous clash. Today at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium, Chennai Super Kings were sent out to bat first and were looking good to post a mammoth total on the scoreboard.

Thanks to a superb hundred from skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings were able to score 210 runs in their 20 overs. A stunning cameo also came from Shivam Dube as he scored 66 runs from 27 deliveries. That proved to be the turning point of the innings as the opposition had no answer to his blows.

In response, Lucknow Super Giants had one of the worst possible starts as they lost Quinton de Kock. KL Rahul started off aggressively but was unable to play a solid innings today as he was sent back inside the powerplay. Marcus Stoinis scored a magnificent hundred and guided his team to victory and grabbed all the points today in Chennai.

Chennai Super Kings still sit comfortably despite defeat to Lucknow Super Giants

Despite this defeat at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium against Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings still sit in fifth position. They have won four games and have lost as many in their eight matches in the tournament. They would be looking at the 16-point threshold which most of the time guarantees a spot in the playoffs for any franchise.

Chennai Super Kings have a decent NRR of 0.41 but would be looking to strengthen it in the upcoming games. A healthy NRR can help the franchise a lot because when the tournament nears its completion and if two teams are on the same points, the NRR comes into question.

However, their next game is Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are sitting above them in the points table. They need a win in that game to ensure that they do not fall behind the rest of the franchises.
