Kolkata Knight Riders secured their sixth victory in the Indian Premier League 2024 season by defeating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets at Eden Gardens on Monday. Delhi Capitals, however, suffered their sixth loss of the season out of 11 matches and remained in sixth place. DC's batting line-up failed to perform, with none of their top eight players scoring even 30 runs. Only Kuldeep Yadav managed to score 35 and helped the team reach a total of 153 for 9.

KKR made a great start by scoring 79 for no loss within the first six overs. Although Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets between them, KKR were never in trouble. Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer carefully guided KKR towards the target, and they succeeded with 21 balls to spare. Phil Salt played a brilliant innings and scored 68 runs in 33 balls, while Shreyas and Venkatesh contributed 33 from 23 balls and 26 from 23 deliveries, respectively.

Delhi Capitals have three matches remaining and they must win all of them to have a chance of qualifying for the playoffs. However, even if they win two matches, they might not be assured of qualification if multiple teams end up with the same number of points. In an ideal situation, Delhi Capitals would want to win all three remaining matches to finish with 16 points, which would significantly improve their chances of making it to the playoffs.

“It was a good option to bat first. As a batting unit we didn't bat well, 150 was below par with how things were going. But we learn from our mistakes, every day is not your day. The way we were going as a team was nice (winning 4 out of their last 5 games), but these games come along in T20s. I think anything around 180-210 would have been a good score, we didn't give our bowlers enough runs to defend,” said Rishabh Pant at the post-match presentation.
