IPL 2024 Teams Preview: Strategies, captaincy updates, players' stats and more
Chennai Super Kings will start the title defence at their home in Chepauk, on Saturday, March 22.
8. Punjab Kings
Chopping and changing are part of Punjab Kings’ culture. However, the Shikhar Dhawan-led side hasn’t changed much to their squad in 2024. The likes of Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, Sikandar Raza, Liam Livingstone and Prabhsimran Singh have been retained ahead of IPL 2024 and needless to say, they would be massively involved in shaping the playing XI.
Prabhsimran Singh, who had a breakout year in 2023, in which the 23-year-old made 358 runs in 14 matches, had a terrific domestic season, which will boost his confidence ahead of the 17th edition of the IPL. He will open alongside veteran batter Shikhar Dhawan, who hasn’t played much cricket in recent times, and that’s a concern. Bairstow’s dip in form and Curran’s inconsistency can’t be ignored as well.
However, if they are on song, Punjab Kings can be a difficult team to beat. Be it Bairstow, Curran, Livingstone or the new addition Rilee Rossouw, each of these batters are game-changer and that’s Punjab’s biggest strength in IPL 2024. Meanwhile, spin bowling seems to be concerning as Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Brar haven’t done exceptionally well for the team in the past but Punjab believes in their ability regardless.
When it comes to the pace attack, Rabada will lead the charge with Arshdeep Singh and new edition Harshal Patel by his side. Having Harshal in the squad will solve their death-bowling issue, as the team can use more of Arshdeep with the new ball. They also have Vidwath Kaverappa in the mix, who can be an exciting choice, as he has done well in domestic cricket and for India A.
