IPL 2025: 5 Capped and 1 uncapped player RR might retain ahead of the mega-auction

The inaugural Indian Premier League champions, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have consistently performed well in recent years, regularly reaching the playoffs. In the 2024 edition, under Sanju Samson's leadership, they finished third in the group stage with eight wins from 14 games. They started the knockout stages with a bang as they defeated the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the eliminator by four wickets but fell short against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2. As the mega-auction approaches, the Royals face crucial decisions regarding player retention. With the BCCI's retention rules still not finalized every choice will be pivotal for their future success. Let us have a look at three potential players that RR could retain ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The 31-year-old made his India debut in 2015 and since he hasn’t played for the national team in the last years, the seamer will be considered an uncapped player and RR can take advantage of that. In IPL 2024, Sandeep played 11 matches for the franchise, which shows that he has always been in the plans and is a first-choice player. He picked up 13 wickets at an economy rate of 8.18, which is not bad if they get him at only INR 4 crore. Overall, Sandeep has played 23 games for the inaugural champions and picked up as many wickets. He can partner with Trent Boult as the Punjab-born can be deadly with the new ball. He can swing and trouble the batters early on. Having him in the mix, Rajasthan’s bowling unit looks sorted as well. The Bengaluru franchise released Yuzvendra Chahal ahead of the mega-auction, which is arguably one of their biggest strategic mistake in the history of the competition. Chahal later went on to join Rajasthan and proved to be a deadly spinner and helped the team win plenty of matches. In the three seasons that Chahal played for RR, he has picked up 66 wickets, which is phenomenal, to say the least. He has been the difference with the ball and there’s no reason why the franchise would want to part ways with a match-winner like him. Head coach Rahul Dravid and Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara very well understand what Chahal brings to the table and for the same reason, they will look forward to retaining him. Overall, the leg-spinner has played 160 games in the IPL and has picked up 205 wickets at an average of 22.44. If Rajasthan eventually retain the leggie, their spin bowling unit will be sorted and with Trent, their overall bowling unit looks good. He has been part of the set-up for seven years and was even considered for captaincy at a stage. He has been one of the best performers for Rajasthan in recent times and is someone who can completely change the complexion of the game at any point. Finding a premium opener might prove to be difficult in the auction, which is why, it’s very likely that RR might retain him. Notably, the 33-year-old has so far represented Rajasthan in 83 matches and scored 3055 runs. During this time, he has scored seven centuries in the cash-rich league, including four in the 2022 edition, in which Rajasthan also qualified for the finals, but unfortunately lost to Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, the trio of Jaiswal, Buttler and Samson have been their biggest asset in the last few seasons and now with the possibility of six retentions, the team management is unlikely to break them apart. Since joining the franchise in 2022, Boult has been a valuable asset, claiming 45 wickets in 41 matches over three seasons. His performance in the last season was particularly impressive, with 16 wickets in 15 innings. Boult's ability to swing the ball both ways and maintain excellent line and length makes him a dangerous bowler. In the powerplay, the Kiwi pacer scalped 12 wickets, making an impact earlier in the innings. The left-arm pacer will be once again given the responsibility to lead the bowling attack and pick crucial wickets for the side. Jaiswal's ability to accelerate when needed has earned him the team's trust. In the previous season, he scored 435 runs in 15 innings, including a half-century and a century against Mumbai Indians.
