Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, numerous bowlers have produced some exhilarating performances which have often handed favourable results to their respective teams. In the 16th edition of the top-tier league, Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Akash Madhwal recorded arguably one of the best spells in the IPL, during the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator. In doing so, the pacer comfortably made his place in an elite list of cricketers with the best bowling spells in IPL history. 5. Akash Madhwal (MI) | vs LSG, 2023 | 5/5 in 3.3 overs
Madhwal was at his lethal best for MI, as he recorded a jaw-dropping spell of 5/5 against LSG in his 3.3 overs at a splendid economy of 1.42. Thanks to his masterclass, MI cruised to the Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2023.
4. Anil Kumble (RCB) | vs RR, 2009 | 5/5 in 3.1 overs
In the second match in IPL 2009, the spin great registered a magnificent spell against Rajasthan Royals, as he got a five-wicket haul in his 3.1 over for just five runs. Courtesy of his magical spell, Rajasthan were restricted to a paltry 58 runs during the chase as RCB won the game comprehensively.
3. Adam Zampa (RPS) | vs SRH, 2016 | 6/19 in 4 overs
In 2016, plying his trade for Rising Pune Supergiant (now defunct) against SRH, Zampa took the rival team by storm with his six-wicket haul for 19 runs in his four overs. Despite recording an impressive spell, Zampa’s team ended up on the losing side.
2. Sohail Tanvir (RR) | vs CSK, 2008 | 6/14 in 4 overs
In the inaugural edition of the league in 2008, Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir registered the best spell in the particular season with a six-for to his account. In his four overs against CSK, Tanvir sliced the top and middle-order like a hot knife and claimed six wickets for just 14 runs at a stunning economy of 3.50. He also grabbed the IPL Purple Cap in the inaugural season.
1. Alzarri Joseph (MI) | vs SRH, 2019 | 6/12 in 3.4 overs
Alzarri Joseph made his dream debut, donning the MI outfit during a match against SRH in 2019. In mere 3.4 overs, Joseph landed a six-wicket haul for just 12 runs. In doing so, not only did Mumbai comprehensively beat SRH by 40 runs, but also the pacer recorded the best bowling figures in the history of the league.
