1. Australia records World Cup’s biggest victory (by runs)
In the 24th match of the tournament, Australia hammered the Netherlands by 309 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and became the team to register the biggest World Cup victory in terms of margin of runs. Batting first, the Aussies put up 399 runs on the board, riding on David Warner’s 104 (93) and Glenn Maxwell’s 106 (44). Defending the huge score, the five-time champions bundled out the Dutch side on 90 runs.
2. Glenn Maxwell scores the fastest World Cup ton
Glenn Maxwell looked stunning with his bat in Australia’s heaviest triumph against the Netherlands. The right-handed batter notched up a century in just 40 deliveries and surpassed South Africa middle-order batter Aiden Markram’s record of the fastest World Cup hundred that came in this tournament against Sri Lanka at the same venue.
3. England’s heaviest World Cup defeat (by runs)
England faced their heaviest World Cup defeat at the hands of South Africa in the 20th match of the competition played at the Wankhede Stadium. In the crucial contest against the Proteas, the English side capitulated to 170 runs in reply to a target of 400 runs. This emphatic loss also became their biggest defeat in their ODI cricket history. Before this game, England’s biggest World Cup defeat was against South Africa at the Oval in the World Cup 1999.
4. Mohammed Shami becomes the only Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul twice
India speedster Mohammed Shami claimed a fifer in India’s four-wicket victory against New Zealand in Dharamshala. With this sensational performance, he overtook illustrious names such as Kapil Dev, Ashish Nehra, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh, and Yuvraj Singh, who picked up five wickets once in their World Cup careers.
5. Quinton de Kock surpasses AB de Villers’ record of most centuries in a World Cup edition
South Africa opener Quinton de Kock hit his third century of this World Cup and shattered his former colleague AB de Villers’ record of scoring the most tons in a World Cup installment. The former Protea legend had scored two centuries in the 2011 World Cup edition and registered the incredible feat to his name.
6. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh put up the highest opening stand for Australia in the World Cup
Australia vanquished Pakistan by 62 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. In this scintillating triumph, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh took Pakistan’s bowling unit to the cleaners and stitched a superb opening stand of 259 runs in 33.5 overs. The partnership was broken by Shaheen Afridi, who dismissed Marsh on 121.
The amazing stand between both batters is Australia’s most successful opening partnership in the World Cup. Earlier, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin’s 183-run partnership against Canada in the 2011 World Cup was Australia’s biggest opening stand in the marquee ODI competition.
7. David Warner breaks Ricky Ponting’s feat of the most centuries in the World Cup
Australia thumped the Dutch side by 309 runs at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium and in this contest, David Warner played his part efficiently with his outstanding knock of 104 runs (93 deliveries). With this impressive knock, he left behind former Australia captain Ricky Ponting’s record of five hundreds in the World Cup tournaments.
8. Mahmudullah becomes the Bangladesh player with the most centuries in the World Cup
In the 23rd game of the tournament, South Africa pummelled Bangladesh by 149 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. The match didn’t go well for the Bangla side but Mahmudullah showcased his class with the bat. The veteran played an exquisite knock of 111 runs (111 deliveries) and helped his team shorten the margin of defeat. This was Mahumudullah’s third World Cup century which is the most by any Bangladesh batter in the illustrious ODI tournaments.
9. Quinton de Kock becomes the wicketkeeper batter with the highest individual score in the World Cup
South Africa opener Quinton de Kock is wreaking havoc on bowlers with his exceptional batting skills in this World Cup. In the Protea side’s enormous 149-run win against Bangladesh, the wicketkeeper batter played a marvellous innings of 174 runs off 140 deliveries and became the Player of the Match. This standout knock also helped him top the list of wicketkeeper batters with the highest individual score in the World Cup competitions.
10. Afghanistan chase the highest total versus Pakistan in the World Cup history
Before their humiliating eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in this tournament, Pakistan were the unbeatable side in the World Cup while defending 275+ scores. The Afghan side chased down a target of 283 runs with eight wickets in hand and registered its maiden ODI victory against the Men in Green. This extraordinary feat also helped Afghanistan better India’s 274-run chase against Pakistan at Centurion in the 2003 World Cup.
