T20 World Cup 2022: Best XI among not selected players in India's squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to commence in October in Australia. There are some quality players on the roster who will help in India's World Cup campaign, but there were a few individuals who were not selected for the tournament even after impressive performances in the format in the recent past. Four players will accompany the team as reserve players in addition to the 15-man roster that the selectors have picked. While Rohit Sharma is set to lead the Men in Blue, KL Rahul will serve as his deputy. The Indian team has a lot of potential players. The benched players also hold great potential. The selection process is surely a difficult task, and as a result, some deserving players missed their flight to the World Cup 2022. Let us have a look at the best XI among those players who were not selected for India's squad Ruturaj Gaikwad The young cricketer has been tested time and again in the T20I format, but has not been backed enough to get more opportunities. The last time he was seen playing a T20I was in June, when he featured in all five games against South Africa in the home series. Though he could not make an impact initially, he was very much impressive in the two games that India won, thereby leveling the series 2-2. He was named in the squads for various white-ball tours but never got an opportunity to play. After an impressive stint at the IPL last year, his performance graph declined drastically, but the youngster has shown potential. He has not been able to showcase his talent due to the lack of opportunities to feature in the team’s combination, and as a result, has missed out on the World Cup. Ishan Kishan Ishan Kishan's life has completed a full circle in the past 11 months. After being named in the World Cup squad last year and being a regular member of the roaster for India’s bilateral series, Kishan failed to make his way into the World Cup squad this year. He will undoubtedly feel unfortunate, though, as his strong hitting and southpaw status would have made him a useful addition to the team for the T20 World Cup in 2022. Kishan may have found a spot in the team at the top of the order because India doesn't have any left-handers in the top-order other than Rishabh Pant, who isn't in the best of form. He scored 418 runs at an average of 32.15 in the 2022 IPL, with three fifties to his credit. Kishan could have served as a backup opener and been provided the opportunity to play in either the World Cup or the upcoming home series against Australia and South Africa because even KL Rahul has been struggling to find his rhythm. Sanju Samson The biggest shocker this season was Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the squad, as he could neither make it to the list of reserve players. Samson's skill set would have been ideal for the team to select in Australian circumstances where the ball naturally comes on to the bat effectively. Samson must be truly thinking at this point about what else he needs to do to be on the national team. He has always given it his all when given the chance, but he has been passed over once again, adding to the wicketkeeper-batter's sense of frustration. Sanju Samson's selection would have offered India a true attacking intent in the middle order and a trustworthy presence behind the stumps in the T20 World Cup 2022, as Rishabh Pant appears unable to break out of his slump in the shorter formats. Shreyas Iyer Shreyas Iyer has not made it to the main squad but will be traveling with the Indian team as a stand-by player. He was a part of the list of reserve players even during the Asia Cup 2022 but never made it to the main squad even after a couple of injury concerns in the main team. Iyer has faced a lot of criticism recently for giving away his wicket cheaply. The batter has constantly faced problems with short-pitch deliveries. He has majorly ended up losing his wickets to such deliveries and that would be a concern on Australian soil. It was not surprising to not see Iyer’s name in the roaster, because many other players deserved a place over him, of which some even made the cut. Iyer’s last international stint was against the West Indies, where he fell prey to the short pitch deliveries and left everyone unimpressed. Venkatesh Iyer From being pitched as the next big thing in Indian cricket, to completely being out of the selector’s vision for the Indian side, Venkatesh Iyer had a topsy-turvy year. He showcased some brilliant performances both with the bat and the ball last year at the IPL in UAE, but that was it for him. Ever since his successful stint at IPL 2022, he has not managed to leave an impact. He traveled with India last year for the World Cup as a net bowler. But his form reduced drastically this year, and he was sidelined from the squad. Venkatesh Iyer rose to stardom sharply, but his downfall was as quick as his rise. It won’t come as a surprise to not see him in the squad because he has not been a part of the white-ball squad for quite some time now, and the selectors went with the names who have consistently shown improvement. Ravindra Jadeja Had he been available, he would have surely been in the squad and would have also made it to the playing XI for every game, because he’s the seasoned all-rounder that India has trusted upon. The recent Asia Cup group stage game against Pakistan is a prime example. Jadeja suffered an injury to his knee during the Asia Cup 2022, which ruled him out of the continental event. He has undergone surgery successfully, but it will take him some time to get back into the game. As a result, he was ruled out of the marquee event as well. To fill in the void for the left-handed spin-bowling all-rounder in the team, Indian selectors went ahead with Axar Patel, a perfect like-for-like substitute for Jadeja. Recently, Patel has also emerged as the batting option down the order, and thus he’s a good choice for the team. Shardul Thakur Shardul Thakur has not been that impactful in the white-ball format, as compared to the red-ball cricket. He was a part of India’s squad last year and even played the fixtures against New Zealand and Afghanistan, but failed to pick a single wicket in the two games. He moved to Delhi Capitals in the recent edition of the Indian Premier League and faced criticism for conceding crucial runs. He’s dubbed as ‘Lord Thakur’ for his heroics in the Test setup, but he has not been able to put up a remarkable show in the international 20-over setup. The unpredictability of his performances has kept him out of the selector’s sight and thus he has not played many T20Is recently. The injury concerns also kept him out for a brief while. Thakur will have to be consistent enough in his performances to earn himself a place in India’s T20I squad. Deepak Chahar Chahar, a capable new ball-bowler, is included among the standbys but is not selected for the 15-person squad. Chahar is a menace for the opposition batters upfront, getting the ball to swing even in unfavorable conditions, with an economy rate of 7.61 in T20Is in the powerplay overs. His IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings has backed him a lot, and it was visible when they paid a hefty sum of INR 14 CR to get him back in the side during the mega auctions for the 2022 season. He gained his skipper MS Dhoni’s trust, but a major injury ruled him out of the India games and the entire IPL. He marked his return against Zimbabwe and was very impressive in both the games that he played in, as he did not go wicketless. But he needs to improve in his death over bowling. He has not proven effective under pressure during death overs and had not had many outings recently due to his injury setback. Hence, he made it to the reserves list. Ravi Bishnoi The young spinner has also been the talk of the town ever since the squad was announced. He was given a chance to showcase his skillset at the Asia Cup, and he also proved worthy of the spot on the team as he was one of the most economical bowlers in the Super Four game against Pakistan. Questions were raised after he missed out on the Indian team in the next game, and the youngster could play just one game at the continental event. But that performance against Pakistan earned him a place only in the World Cup squad as a standby player and it came as a shock to see him missing out of the main 15-member roaster. Bishnoi seemed to be the obvious choice for the team for the T20 World Cup 2022 because Chahal hadn't had the best of campaigns at the Asia Cup and Ashwin hadn't played in crucial games. But he, unfortunately, missed the flight and would now be hoping to give his best. Avesh Khan Avesh Khan may feel unlucky that Mohammed Shami was chosen over him and that he was not at least on the list of standbys. Avesh has participated in 15 T20Is during his career, including the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022. Despite not having the finest statistics, he has been a member of the squad for a while and has had playing experience. Shami, on the contrary, last appeared in a T20I at the World Cup in 2021, and his last international outing was in July. Avesh can make the new ball move in addition to having the speed to add bounce to flat grounds. Avesh Khan played just two games at the Asia Cup and managed to bag just two wickets before being ruled out of the tournament. The 25-year-old will now look to improve his game and make the cut for India’s bilateral series so as to fulfil a bigger goal in the future. Mohammed Shami After India was eliminated early from the 2022 Asia Cup, Shami's name was frequently mentioned by cricket experts, who shared their opinion on India's roaster. Given the limited amount of experienced pacers with India at the moment, Shami could have been given an opportunity. The fact that Mohammed Shami was once again passed over for a major tournament was, arguably, the biggest upset. And especially now, when he appears to be using the ball to the fullest of his abilities, the fact that he has been placed on standby makes it much worse. But even with four pure pace bowlers in the lineup currently, Shami's additional speed may have provided India a competitive edge on the fast Australian surfaces. He was a member of India's T20 World Cup squad and had a positive bowling impact. Shami was also essential to Gujarat Titans' victory in the IPL 2022.
