West Indies’ T20 World Cup history from 2007-2024. Stats, Records milestones, and more

The West Indian Cricket Team is known to be one of the most flamboyant teams in the history of the T20 format. The likes of Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell, and countless other stars have become staple diets of many franchise teams. With a natural attacking instinct, West Indies have been one of the biggest attractions in the T20 World Cup which they have won two. As the West Indians get ready to host their 2^nd T20 World Cup they will be looking to become the first side to have won the title thrice.

T20 World Cup 2007- South Africa

Chris Gayle set the stage on fire in the very first game of the T20 World Cup in 2007 with an impressive 117. That knock though went in vain as West Indies lost the game to South Africa and proceeded to lose their next match to Bangladesh. The journey for the Caribbean side was over even before it could begin as they crashed out in the group stages. Chris Gayle with 117 was the highest-scorer with the bat while Ravi Rampaul with 3 wickets was the best bowler for his side.

T20 World Cup 2009 – England

The men in maroon travelled to the Old Blighty for the second edition of the T20 World Cup. West Indies made it to the Super 8 Stages thanks to finishing second in their group. Chris Gayle and his team beat Australia to begin their campaign. One of the most memorable moments was when Gayle hit Brett Lee for a huge six that landed outside the Oval Stadium. In the next game, the West Indians lost to Sri Lanka before beating India and England to make it to the Semi-Finals. The end for the West Indies team came in the final four games as they lost to Sri Lanka by 57 runs. Chris Gayle was the top scorer yet again with 193 runs while Dwayne Bravo was the best bowler with 10 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2010 – West Indies

Just under a year later, it was the turn of the West Indies to host the tournament. The hosts beat England and Ireland to make it past the group stages as the top-placed team in their group. West Indies saw their journey end in the Super 8 Stages when they beat India and lost to Australia and Sri Lanka to crash out before the semi-final stages. For the third time, Chris Gayle was the leading scorer for his side with 132 runs which included his 98 versus India. Darren Sammy was the best bowler for the host picking 6 wickets with an economy rate of 5.26 runs per over.

T20 World Cup 2012 – Sri Lanka

The dream to hold aloft an ICC title came true for the West Indians after 33 long years. The 2012 T20 World Cup saw the Caribbean side take home the title by beating hosts Sri Lanka in the finals by 36 runs. West Indies began their group phase with a loss to Australia following their game against Ireland being rained out. In the Super 8 Stages, defeated England before losing to Sri Lanka. They won their match against New Zealand in the super-over before beating Australia in the Semi-Finals by a massive 74 runs. Marlon Samuels with 230 runs was the best scorer for the West Indians while Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine shared the spoils with the ball with 9 wickets each. 

T20 World Cup 2014 – Bangladesh

Coming into the 2014 T20 World Cup as the defending champions, West Indies made it all the way through the semi-finals. The Caribbean side lost only one game that too against table toppers India while beating Pakistan, Australia, and Bangladesh. The men in maroon were high on confidence as they were on course to repeat their heroics from two years ago. Sri Lanka though exacted their revenge to beat West Indies in the semis and go to the final and win the tournament for the first time. Chris Gayle’s 143 runs was the most runs by a West Indian batter that campaign while Samuel Badree was the best bowler with 11 wickets with an economy rate of 5.65 per over.  

T20 World Cup 2016 – India

By the time the T20 World Cup came to India, West Indies were one of the most favoured sides considering the experience of playing in the IPL. The Caribbean side beat Sri Lanka, England, and South Africa before suffering a shock loss to Afghanistan. The biggest test awaited them in the semis where they played India in front of a packed house in Mumbai. Lendl Simmons with 82 not out helped his side win the game and march to the finals. Marlon Samuels and Carlos Brathwaite made sure the West Indian create history by beating England in a pulsating finish with two balls to spare. Braithwaite hit Ben Stokes for four successive sixes to prompt Ian Bishop to say “Remember the Name” in one of the most iconic moments. Marlon Samuels with 181 runs was the best West Indian batter with Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo, and Samuel Badree picking 9 wickets each.

T20 World Cup 2021 – India/UAE

West Indies held onto their title for 5 years before the next T20 World Cup was played. Unfortunately, most of their star names were at the end of their careers with the likes of Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo retiring after the tournament. With just a single win against Bangladesh, the holders exited the tournament. West Indies were bowled out for 55 against England which marked the lowest total ever by a member side in the history of the tournament. With 127 runs, Shimron Hetmyer was the best batter for West Indies while Akeal Hossein with 5 wickets was the best bowler.

T20 World Cup 2022 – Australia

Two-time T20 World Cup winners, West Indies shocked the world when they failed to make it to the main stages of the tournament. The former winners had to play the qualifiers which saw them lose to Scotland before beating Zimbabwe. Needing to beat the Ireland side, West Indies failed as the Irish won by 4 wickets to break a million West Indian fans' hearts. Brandon King’s 79 runs was the best return by a West Indian batter while Alzzari Joseph picked 6 wickets with the ball.
