WPL 2024: 3 players who were underutilized by MI

<p>Mumbai Indians women set the stage on fire in the WPL 2023 by winning the title. They became the first team to win the WPL. For the same reason, they were regarded as the favourites to win the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20/wipl-womens-indian-premier-league/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WPL 2024</a>. While they had a brilliant start to the tournament and looked good to defend the title, RCB women got the better of them in the Eliminator in a low-scoring thriller.</p>
<p>It was a sad moment for the players and the fans. While MI women looked good to defend the title for most parts, they had some concerns. Shabnim Ismail and Harmanpreet Kaur got injured in different capacities. Some of the players who did well in 2023 were not in form in 2024. In the bug game, MI women faltered and could not chase down the target.</p>
<p>Some of the players who deserved to be in the XI were not given as many chances, which was also one of the reasons for their failure of title defense.</p>

However, the South African has not gotten enough chances to play. The star player has excellent skills as a player. Tryon is a left-arm orthodox spinner who can turn the ball away from the right-handers. With the bat, she can add a few runs lower down the order. Players like her bring balance to the side. However, MI women could not make use of her well.</p>
<p>In both seasons, MI have found Amelia Kerr to be a better option. In the WPL 2024, MI's overseas players were Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Kerr, and Shabnim Ismail. Hence, MI women could not play Tryon in the team. Even when Ismail got injured, MI preferred Wong in the XI. MI had some problems in the middle order as some of their batters were not consistent.&nbsp;</p>

The fact that Shabnim was picked in the auction led to MI starting with her over Wong. Throughout the season, Wong was underutilized by MI. The English player did well in the limited chances she got in the WPL 2024. In two matches in the WPL 2024, she claimed three wickets at a bowling average of 16.66, a bowling SR of 12.00, and an economy rate of 8.33.</p>
<p>In the WPL 2023, she was brilliant as a bowler. The right-arm pacer played ten matches and claimed 15 wickets at a bowling average of 14.00, at a bowling SR of 13.00, at an economy rate of 6.46. She was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. However, the defending champions opted to play the South African experienced player, Ismail, who was brilliant with the new ball.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amandeep Kaur was a utility player for MI women in WPL 2023. She was handy with useful runs lower down the order. With the ball, she bowled a couple of overs or so in the middle overs. More often than not, her contribution to the team went unnoticed. In the WPL 2024, Amandeep did not find a place in the team. MI women had two different options as replacements for Amandeep in the WPL 2024.</p>
<p>In some matches, Amanjot Kaur got chances. However, in most of the instances, Sajeevan Sajana replaced Amandeep as the all-rounder. Sajana finished some matches for MI women. The biggest of them was the season inaugural where she hit a six when five runs were needed in the last ball. She was handy with the ball as well and stepped up whenever needed. Hence, Amandeep did not find a place in the side in the WPL 2024.&nbsp;</p>
