Chamari Athapaththu had a sensational outing in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023, where she finished as the second-highest scorer in the tournament and won the Player of the Series award. However, in a surprising turn of events, the Sri Lankan all-rounder went unsold at the WPL 2024 auction just days after her heroics on Australian soil.

The 34-year-old was later roped in by UPW as a replacement for Lauren Bell, who pulled out of the second season. However, it is a question whether the franchise has been able to bring her out in the best possible way. Chamari Athapaththu was benched in the first three games and was demoted to number three. A change in the batting order (opening) seemed to have impacted her as she failed to make significant contributions with the bat in the rest of the matches.
