WPL 2024: Best batting performances of the tournament

The 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) witnessed some sensational batting performances. Illustrious names such as Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, and Deepti Sharma looked extraordinary against bowlers and delivered desired numbers to their team. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) broke into record books as the second WPL champions and in their success, their batting unit complemented the bowling department consistently. Their key players Perry and captain Mandhana strengthened Bangalore’s batting unit consistently. Delhi Capitals (DC), who were handed an eight-wicket defeat in the final and ended their campaign as runners-up, also saw magnificent support from their batters throughout the tournament. Lanning, Verma, and Alice Capsey exuded confidence with their bats to help their side reach the final for two consecutive seasons. With the bat, she scored 295 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 136.57 and ended up as the leading run-getter for her side. Against Gujarat Giants (GG) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, she recorded her best batting score. Chasing an average total of 153, UPW lost their four wickets at a score of 16. In the critical situation, Sharma held her nerves and stitched a 109-run partnership. The 26-year-old played an unbeaten knock of 88 off just 60 with 13 boundaries (nine fours and four maximums) but her innings couldn’t take UPW home as they fell eight runs short in the end. 4. Jemimah Rodrigues’ unbeaten 69 off 33 against Mumbai Indians (MI) Jemimah Rodrigues. (Photo Source: WPL) Jemimah Rodrigues looked decent with her bat in Delhi’s decent journey in the second WPL instalment. She scored 295 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 136.57. Against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, she played an unbeaten 69-run innings off just 33 balls and powered her side to a 29-run win. Taking advantage of the magnificent start from the top-order batters, Rodrigues attacked MI’s quality bowling unit and played some brilliant strokes. She went back to the pavilion with her score of unbeaten 69 off 33. Her innings was studded with 11 boundaries (eight fours and three maximums). Riding on her knock, Delhi posted a huge total of 192 in their 20-over quota. 3. Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 85 off 51 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Beth Mooney. In match 13, when RCB and GG clashed in Delhi, Mooney wreaked havoc on the former’s bowlers and scored an unbeaten 85 off just 51. Winning the toss, GG batted first and put up a massive score of 199 runs on the board. Mooney, along with her opening partner Laura Woolvardt, built a 140-run partnership for the first wicket. Woolvardt went back to the pavilion after scoring 76 off 45 but the Aussie stood at the crease until the end and decimated RCB’s bowling attack. She concluded her knock on a score of unbeaten 85 off 51 and riding on her spunky innings, Giants won by 19 runs. Mooney’s amazing batting effort also got her the Player of the Match award. 2. Harmanpreet brought joy to the faces of her team’s supporters with her unbeaten knock of 95 off 48 against GG. Winning the toss, GG batted first and accumulated 190 runs on the board. Following the huge target, Yastika Bhatia gave a solid start to the team. After the fall of two wickets, Harmanpreet joined Yastika and took GG’s bowling unit to the cleaners. She racked up 95 off just 48 and stole the game from Gujarat’s grasp. With one ball remaining, Mumbai won the game with seven wickets in hand and the MI veteran became the recipient of the Player of the Match award. 1. She made a major contribution with both bat and ball in her team’s extraordinary success. In big games, she utilised her vast experience and delivered impactful numbers to her team. Against MI in the Eliminator held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, when Challengers lost three wickets under the powerplay overs, Perry displayed nerves of steel and smashed her second fifty of the competition. On the difficult batting turf, her 66-run innings off just 50 balls took Bangalore to a score of 135 at the end of the innings.
