WPL 2024: Flop XI of the tournament

The 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) ended after entertaining cricket supporters for 24 days. Delhi Capitals (DC) qualified for the final of the tournament for two consecutive times but didn’t get success in lifting the trophy like the previous year. On one side, the DC camp is going through sorrow while on the other side, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have made their fans proud after pocketing an eight-wicket win and lifting the coveted trophy. Following the competition, Ellyse Perry and Shreyanka Patil are getting commended for making a massive contribution to Challengers’ title victory while Meg Lanning is also receiving appreciation for leading Capitals from the front. Unlike these players, some players looked completely out of rhythm in the competition and delivered disappointment to their teams. Here is the flop XI of the 2024 WPL 1. Alyssa Healy (C) & (WK) Alyssa Healy. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) UP Warriorz concluded their campaign in the league round due to their dismal performance. One of the reasons for their failure was their skipper Alyssa Healy’s flop batting show. As a skipper, expectations were high for her but she couldn’t fulfill her responsibility. Appearing in eight games, she could score only 175 runs at a miserable strike rate of 117.44. In the do-or-die game against Gujarat Giants (GG), UPW faced an eight-run loss and was knocked out of the competition. Following a target of 153, UPW required their captain to play a quality knock, but she fell after scoring only four runs. (Photo Source: Twitter/WPL) Along with Healy, Kiran Navgire also looked ineffective with her bat. Except for her 57-run innings against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, she failed to produce any other effective knock from her bat. The 29-year-old played eight matches in the competition and scored only 110 runs at a disheartening average of 13.75. In pressure games against MI, DC, and GG, Navgire fell on digital scores which proved detrimental for her side. Her failure to deliver quality starts as an opener affected UP’s performance negatively at the entire event. 3. Tahlia McGrath Tahila McGrath ( Photo source: X / Twitter ) Tahlia McGrath was the most successful batter for UPW in the maiden WPL edition in 2023. Noting her previous year’s performance, UP’s fans were expecting her to display her formidable side again this year. However, the Aussie failed to live upto her team’s expectations with her sub-par performance. Appearing in four games, she scored only 27 runs at a horrendous average of 6.75. Witnessing her flop show against DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, she was benched for the remaining season as captain Healy dropped her from the playing XI. 4. Disha Kasat Disha Kasat. (Photo Source: RCB) Disha Kasat played four games for RCB but couldn’t be impactful with her bat. In the entire 2024 WPL season, she batted twice but got dismissed on a duck in both instances. Against DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, she came to bat at number seven and got dismissed on a duck in a crunch situation. She was promoted in the batting order against MI in the Eliminator game in Delhi and this time, she returned to the pavilion on nought again after facing seven deliveries. Fortunately, her terrible batting didn’t impact RCB negatively in the knockout game. 5. Sophie Devine Sophie Devine (Photo source: X/ Twitter) Sophie Devine was the leading run-getter for RCB in 2023 but this time, she failed to continue her form. The right-handed batter showed up in 10 matches and scored only 136 runs at a strike rate of 125.92 and an average of 15.11. She registered a double-figure knock in the first five games only once. Against GG in Delhi, she played some good strokes but couldn’t create an impact after getting dismissed on 23 after 16 balls. In the final, she played as an opener and delivered a fine knock to her side but as a middle-order batter, it was witnessed that she failed to do her job efficiently. 6. Sajeevan Sajana Sajeevan-Sajana. (Photo Source: Twitter/MI) India's uncapped all-rounder Sajeevan Sajana was tasked to reinforce MI with her batting in the lower-middle order. She played nine games in the competition and contributed only 87 runs in six innings to her team’s journey until the playoffs In MI’s final league game, she opened the innings against RCB in Delhi and looked in good touch with five fours and a maximum but fell prey to Ellyse Perry after scoring 30 off 21. Her poor numbers clearly reveal that she struggled to be among the runs. 7. Kathryn Emma Bryce Kathryn Bryce ( Photo source: X / Twitter ) England’s uncapped all-rounder Kathryn Emma Bryce had a forgettable WPL debut. Donning GG’s jersey, the English stalwart played eight games and delivered disheartening numbers to her side. As a batter, she scored 83 runs at a strike rate of 97.64 and an average of 20.75 while with the ball, the 26-year-old got only four wickets at an expensive economy of 8.66. The GG team management expected Bryce to deliver breakthroughs to the side in middle overs but she not only failed to pick up wickets but also struggled to contain the flow of runs. Her terrible performance played a crucial role in Gujarat’s shambolic campaign. 8. Mannat Kashyap Mannat Kashyap. (Source: Twitter/X) Mannat Kashyap’s job was to strengthen Gujarat’s spin-bowling unit with her left-arm bowling. She got five games from the GG team management but scalped only one wicket at a hefty economy of 8.16. The 20-year-old made her debut against UPW at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. In her team’s six-wicket hammering, she bowled only one over and gave away 14 runs. However, skipper Beth Mooney didn’t lose faith in the youngster and included her in the playing XI in the next four games. Despite getting chances, she couldn’t prove herself with the ball. 9. Meghna Singh Meghna Singh (Source: WPL) Meghna Singh kicked off her WPL career in GG colours, this year. The team management gave her the opportunity in eight games but she put up a disappointing show with the ball, clinching five wickets at a sub-par economy of 10.08. Except for her performance against DC in Bengaluru, she lacked discipline with the ball in all other matches. In the final league game against DC, she splurged 28 runs in her two-over spell and concluded the 2024 WPL season with disappointment. 10. Anjali Sarvani Anjali Sarvani. (Photo Source: Twitter) Anjali Sarvani failed to be productive with the ball for UPW for two consecutive seasons. After getting retained, her duty was to showcase her bowling mettle and prove her franchise’s decision correct. However, she couldn’t satiate her team, bagging only two wickets in four contests at an economy of 11.44. UP won their first game by seven wickets but Sarvani’s bowling numbers were disastrous as she took one wicket and leaked 38 runs in her four-over spell. Against RCB in Bengaluru, her numbers got worse as she gave away runs at an economy of 14.33 in three overs. 11. Renuka Singh Renuka Singh ( Photo source : X / Twitter ) RCB won their maiden title and broke into record books as the second WPL trophy winners. After the success, Bangalore supporters are jubilant about their team’s triumph and aren’t concerned about the players who failed to deliver excellent numbers to the side after two seasons. However, the team management won’t be satisfied with these non-performers and will look forward to getting rid of the names before the 2025 WPL auction. Renuka Singh, whose responsibility was to spearhead RCB’s fast-bowling unit, couldn’t do her job efficiently. She played 10 matches in the season and fetched only two wickets at an economy of 8.07. In the final against DC, she bowled a costly spell of 0/28 in two overs. Noting her loose bowling, captain Smriti Mandhana didn’t give her a chance to complete the spell.
