Virat Kohli-Sourav Ganguly miscommunication saga about captaincy Virat Kohli decided to quit captaincy after the 2021 T20 World Cup which was scheduled to be held in October. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly in an interview with News18 said that he requested Kohli to not step down as T20I captain. However, Kohli in the press conference ahead of the South Africa tour, stated that his decision was well received by the selectors without any hesitation. The 33-year-old also conveyed his desire to continue the Test and ODI captaincy unless selectors don’t want him to. The statement made by Kohli and Ganguly was quite different. One could see a clear miscommunication between their dialogues. In the build-up to the South Africa tour 2021-22, the Indian ace-batter was removed from ODI captaincy. The veteran batter expressed his disappointment in the manner he was communicated about his removal from captaincy. This entire saga attracted a lot of attention. 2. Kohli's lack of support comment (in PC after match vs PAK) Virat Kohli arguably has been India's most successful Test captain but he stepped down from the role in January this year after a 2-1 series loss to South Africa. Rohit Sharma was handed over the leadership duties. The 33-year-old in a press conference after India’s Asia Cup 2022 loss to Pakistan at the Super Fours stage stated that when he relinquished the Test captaincy, only MS Dhoni texted him. Kohli further added that many people had his number but no one except the former Indian captain showed their support. This revelation from the former Indian captain raised a lot of eyebrows. 3. Steve Smith-Warner-Bancroft ball-tampering saga The Australian Cricket was turned upside down in the third Test against South Africa at Newlands in March 2018. Cameron Bancroft was seen taking an object out of his pocket and trying to change the condition of the ball. The Australian captain at that time Steve Smith in the post-match conference admitted that his side deliberately tried to tamper with the ball to gain an undue advantage. He also stated that the leadership group was aligned with this plan. Following this fiasco, Cricket Australia banned skipper Smith and vice-captain David Warner for 12 months and Bancroft for nine months. Warner and Smith were also barred from playing IPL 2018. The Australian coach Darren Lehmann also stepped down from his head coach role. This phase was the darkest in the history of Australian Cricket. 4. Yuzvendra Chahal’s “dangling from the 15th level of a building” revelation Yuzvendra Chahal is known for his mastery with the ball and has often hogged the limelight due to his match-winning performances. However, earlier this year, he grabbed the headlines due to a shocking disclosure the veteran spinner made of a near-death experience he encountered in 2013. In a video chat themed on 'Comeback Stories' hosted by his IPL team Rajasthan Royals, Chahal described an incident that happened during his stint with the Mumbai Indians. He stated that one of his teammates who was drunk took him on the balcony and hung him from the 15th floor of a building. Chahal further added that he was lucky to have a narrow escape and this unsettling incident has made him introspect about behaving responsibly in public places. The 32-year-old was with the Mumbai franchise only for that year. 5. The Hansie Cronje match-fixing saga The cricket fraternity was in a state of shock when South Africa’s captain Hansie Cronje was found guilty of being in contact with the match-fixing outfit in India. This incident happened in the year 2000. The allegations on Cronje arose when tapes between him and an Indian bookie named Sanjay Chawla surfaced. The South African skipper first denied such claims but later accepted them. Many South African cricketers, including batsman Herschelle Gibbs and spinner Nicky Boje, also confessed to having been approached by Cronje to underperform in international matches. Cronje read a 22-page statement where he mentioned that he was approached by a bookie for the first time during the Mandela Cup in 1995. Cronje suffered a life-long ban for accepting money from bookmakers for providing information and fixing matches. Cricket as a sport was not the same after this incident. 6. Robin Uthappa revealing that he was made to sign papers forcefully to leave Mumbai Indians Robin Uthappa has been an IPL great and has been in the world’s biggest T20 tournament since its inception. The dashing cricketer made a stunning revelation when he portrayed the dark side of the Indian Premier League. In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Uthappa stated how difficult it was for him to move from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He mentioned that he was forcibly made to sign the transfer papers by someone in the Mumbai camp. The veteran cricketer made his IPL debut in 2008 with the Mumbai franchise but in the next season was transferred to RCB. The 36-year-old acknowledged that he went into depression after this debacle. 7. Wriddhiman Saha being threatened by a journalist Wriddhiman Saha dropped a bombshell earlier this year when he tweeted a screenshot of messages from a journalist who was forcibly trying to have an interview with the cricketer. The 37-year-old also questioned the level of Journalism in the country in his social media post. The journalist was revealed to be Boria Majumdar. BCCI's three-member committee started their probe into this matter. Boria accused the Indian player to tamper with the message. On investigation, the journalist was found to be guilty. The Indian Cricket Board banned the journalist for two years for “Threatening and intimidating” the Indian wicket-keeper. Boria has been banned from interviewing any registered Indian cricketer for two years. Also, he has been banned from getting any accreditation as a member of the press in any of the cricket matches in India. 8. Shoaib Akhtar's disclosure that Danish Kaneria was ill-treated by Pakistani teammates Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar made a startling disclosure in the year 2019 when he stated that Danish Kaneria was ill-treated by other Pakistani teammates due to his religion. In a cricket show titled ‘Game on Hai’, the speedster revealed that a few Pakistan players would not dine with Kaneria because of his religion and did not give him due credit for his performances. Later the leg-spinner confirmed the claims about his mistreatment. He also acknowledged that many veteran players like Akhtar treated him like equals. Danish was only the second Hindu player after Anil Dalpat to represent Pakistan in international cricket. 9. Darren Sammy called "ka*lu" by players in the IPL Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy made an appalling disclosure in 2020 when he talked about the racial discrimination he was subjected to during his IPL tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Sammy was part of the Hyderabad franchise from 2013 to 2015. Sammy took to social media to say that he and former Sri Lankan skipper Thisara Perera were called "kalu" when they were part of the league. Kalu, a Hindi word, means a black person in English. The veteran all-rounder added that he felt that “Kalu” meant “strong Stallion” but when he got to know the meaning he was very furious. Sammy has been very vocal about “racism in cricket” and has been voicing against the injustice to 'people of colour'. 10. Brendon Taylor's revelation of being blackmailed to participate in Spot-fixing Brendan Taylor dropped a bombshell in January this year when he disclosed an incident of an Indian businessman blackmailing him to spot-fix international matches. The former Zimbabwe skipper took to Twitter to let the world know about this incident which took place in 2019. In the statement, Taylor stated that he was approached by the businessman in October 2019 to fly down to India to discuss some sponsorships and potential T20 competition in Zimbabwe. The cricketer was offered $15,000 to do so. In India, the veteran player ended up having cocaine with the businessman and his colleagues. The following day, he was blackmailed to participate in spot-fixing else a video of him doing drugs will be leaked. Taylor also added that if this confession results in a multi-year ban he will humbly accept it. He was in fact handed a ban from all forms of cricket for three and a half years.
