2019 World Cup: Revisiting unforgettable moments

The 2019 World Cup saw the return of the mega ICC event to England after 20 years. The tournament was hosted between May 30 and July 14, across 10 venues in England and a single venue in Wales, respectively. The World Cup also saw only 10 teams in the competition, a decrease from 14 nations in the 2015 World Cup. The format of the World Cup goes back to the 1992 World Cup, where all the participating teams played each other once in a round-robin format and the top four teams made it into the semi-finals. India, Australia, England, and New Zealand made it into the semis. From this, New Zealand and England clashed in the final at the Lord’s. The tournament had many unforgettable moments throughout the whole series and though it was hard to choose and pick specific instances, here are some of the best moments of the 2019 World Cup. (Photo Source: ICC) Afghanistan team almost performed miracles in two of the matches in the ODI World Cup 2019 against the Asian heavyweights in the form of India and Pakistan. First India and Afghanistan clashed in Southampton, and a spirited bowling by the Afghan Atlans restricted India to 224/8 in 50 overs. Virat Kohli top-scored with 67 while Kedar Jadhav contributed with a vital 52-run knock. In reply, Afghanistan paced their innings perfectly and were inching towards a famous win with Mohammed Nabi scoring a brilliant fifty. But in the end, Mohammed Shami’s 4/40 proved to be too good, as they only made 213 and lost the game by just 11 runs. Against Pakistan, Afghanistan batted first and put on 227/9. And then Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman reduced Pakistan to 156/6 at one stage and looked set to win the match. (Photo Source: Getty images) New Zealand clashed with West Indies in Manchester in an epic match. Batting first, the Kiwis posted 291/8 in 50 overs. Kane Williamson top-scored with 148 and Ross Taylor made 69. For the West Indies, Sheldon Cottrell took 4/56. In response, Chris Gayle started well for West Indies with an 87-run knock. But New Zealand fought back by chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. Shimron Hetmyer made 54 runs, but it was Carlos Brathwaite, whose maiden ODI century kept West Indies in the game till the end. He made 101 in 82 balls with 5 sixes and 9 fours, as West Indies fell agonizingly short by just five runs, scoring 286 runs. After the match, Brathwaite looked shattered and was on his knees in disappointment, but New Zealand players came up to him and consoled him and praised his magnificent knock. 5. India defeats Pakistan once again, extending the lead to 7-0 India vs Pakistan Whenever India and Pakistan clash against each other in World Cup tournaments, it is a festival in both countries. Their rivalry is out of this world and when they played in Manchester in the 2019 World Cup, the atmosphere was the same. India batted first and posted 336/5. Rohit Sharma made 140 and Virat Kohli scored 77 runs. In response, Pakistani batters struggled despite Fakhar Zaman’s 62 and Babar Azam’s 48. They were asked to chase 302 from 40 overs due to rain, but could only manage 212/6. Pakistan lost the game by 89 runs via the DLS method. This was India’s seventh win in as many meetings in the ODI World Cup history against Pakistan. 4. Mohammed Shami’s hat-trick against Afghanistan Mohammad Shami Mohammed Shami was the hero of India’s close win over Afghanistan in Southampton. Half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav took India to 224/8. In response, Mohammad Nabi led the chase and Afghanistan needed 16 runs in the last over to win. Shami had the ball in his hand and Nabi hit him for a four the first ball straight over his head. After bowling the second ball a dot, Mohammed Shami turned on the heat as Nabi went for a similar shot over the bowler, but was caught by Hardik Pandya. The next ball Aftab Alam’s stumps were disturbed with a perfect yorker by Shami. And then he created history, but knocking over Mujeeb Ur Rahman with another Yorker. As a result, Shami became only the second Indian after Chetan Sharma to pick up a World Cup hat-trick. 3. Rohit Sharma’s 5 centuries in a single edition; breaks Kumar Sangakkara’s record Rohit Sharma. During his mega event campaign, Sharma ended up smashing one fifty and a record 5 centuries. Notably, against the arch-rivals Pakistan, his highest score was 140. The Hitman with his five tons, broke Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara’s record of most centuries in a single edition of a World Cup. Sangakkara had scored 4 centuries in the 2015 World Cup. This also turned out to be the last outing for the Lankan legend in international cricket. Rohit Sharma went one better and ended with five tons to his name. The Indian opener scored 140 against Pakistan, 122* against South Africa, 104 against Bangladesh, 103 against Sri Lanka, and 102 against England, respectively. 2. New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss and posted 239/8 with fifties from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. New Zealand completed their innings on the reserve day due to rain. But the rain proved to be doom for India. Trent Boult and Matt Henry rocked the top order as Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli all fell for 1 run each. In no time, India was reduced to 92/6. MS Dhoni walked out to bat at no.7 and steadied the ship with Ravindra Jadeja. Both batters scored the fifties and took India within touching distance despite the climbing required run rate. Jadeja fell first for 77 runs, but every Indian fan had still hopes of a win as Dhoni was still there. Unfortunately, MS Dhoni was runout for 50 and India fell short by 18 runs. This also proved to be MS Dhoni’s last international innings as well as he retired in 2020. Incidentally, MS Dhoni was run out on his debut in 2004 as well against Bangladesh and ended his international career on a similar note. 1. (Photo Source: Twitter) England and New Zealand clashed in an epic final that had all the drama a match of this stature in the World Cup requires. New Zealand batted first and posted 241/8. Then an epic knock from Ben Stokes (84*) and a contentious six runs when the ball hit his bat and went for a boundary, enabled England to tie the match. Super Over saw England posting 15 runs and then Jimmy Neesham hit a six to Jofra Archer to bring New Zealand close with 2 runs needed from the final ball. But Martin Guptill was run out going for the second and the super-over was tied as well. But England were declared as the winners on the basis of a 'boundary count' rule as they had hit more fours than New Zealand in the match.
