4. MS Dhoni’s most matches as a skipper
Former India skipper MS Dhoni holds the record of leading a team as captain in the most matches of the Asia Cup. From 2008-12, he served India in the continental trophy as a regular skipper. In the 2008 Asia Cup held in Pakistan, he led the team to the final but couldn’t win a trophy as Sri Lanka played incredibly on the big day and emerged victorious by 100 runs to clinch the trophy.
In the 2010 Asia Cup held in Sri Lanka, India succeeded in clinching the Asia Cup trophy after 15 years under the wicketkeeper-batter's leadership. Dhoni and his men played four games in the competition, in which they won three, beating Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group stage while in the final held in Dambulla, they thrashed Sri Lanka by 81 runs to lift the trophy.
After the 2010 win, he failed to repeat the magic in the 2012 edition of the tournament as Bangladesh beat India in the competition and reserved their spot in the final with Pakistan. In the 2018 Asia Cup, Dhoni was seen captaining the side against Afghanistan, as the regular captain of the tournament Rohit Sharma was rested for the game. So far, he is the player who has captained a side the most times (14 matches) in the Asia Cup. Going through Dhoni’s records, it’s unlikely for any other skipper to break his leadership record in the Asia Cup. Dhoni created this record at a time when the continental championship was played every two years and that too in the ODI format.
