Adam Gilchrist was picked by the now-defunct Deccan Chargers franchise in the IPL 2008 auction. He also led the franchise to IPL 2009 glory after taking over as captain from VVS Laxman. Gilchrist had retired from international cricket in 2008 before the IPL began. He played 96 Tests, 287 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for Australia from 1996-2008.

Gilchrist had much success with the Deccan Chargers and later joined the Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab) before calling time on his cricketing career in 2013. He amassed 2069 runs in 80 matches at an average of 27.22 and strike-rate of 138.39. His highest score was 109* and he hit 2 centuries and 11 fifties in his career.
