The Indian Premier League (IPL) has launched numerous careers. It has helped many cricketers break into national teams. And young cricketers are aiming to give their all in the IPL to earn a spot in the national side. In fact, some budding athletes aim to shine in IPL to set their national launchpad. Additionally, the lucrative competition has provided a platform for cricketers to rekindle their careers. And at times, retired cricketers have demonstrated that they have not lost touch with their performances. These cricketers lend valuable experience to the teams they played for and showed that nothing beats skills and experience even if they have left the game at the highest level. Here are 5 Cricketers who excelled in IPL after retiring from international cricket: 5. Faf du Plessis Faf du Plessis. He made his Indian Premier League debut in 2012 and played for Chennai Super Kings till IPL 2021. He then moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) who bought him in the IPL 2022 auction and has been leading the team since then. Since retirement from international cricket, Faf du Plessis has been busy in T20 leagues worldwide, especially in the IPL. He has made 633, 468, and 730 runs in the last three seasons of the IPL, with 17 fifties to his name and his highest score is 96, which came in IPL 2022. He has also been honoured as the captain of Bangalore after long-time skipper Virat Kohli chose to hang his captaincy boots. 4. Shane Watson Shane Watson. He had a long career for the Aussies, in which he won the World Cup twice, in 2007 and 2015. Watto retired after scoring 3,731 runs in 59 Tests, 5,757 runs in 190 ODIs, and 1,462 runs in 58 T20Is. The all-rounder also picked a total of 291 wickets in international cricket. He continued playing in the IPL and other T20 leagues as well after retirement. He played for RCB and CSK in his twilight years. However, he still managed to win the IPL 2018 for CSK with a century in the final and almost repeated the feat in IPL 2019 as CSK lost by one run in the final to MI. He continued for CSK before announcing his retirement after IPL 2020. 3. MS Dhoni MS Dhoni 2021. He has also captained a team in almost all IPL seasons barring one. He captained CSK from 2008-2015, Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016, and then is leading CSK again from 2018 to present. The Ranchi-born veteran retired from international cricket in 2020 and went on to win the IPL in 2021 and 2023 for the Chennai Super Kings. The former Indian skipper's batting has not been top-notch in the previous three IPL seasons since his retirement. But two IPL titles have proven that he remains the best captain in IPL despite all these years. 2. Adam Gilchrist Adam Gilchrist. He also led the franchise to IPL 2009 glory after taking over as captain from VVS Laxman. Gilchrist had retired from international cricket in 2008 before the IPL began. He played 96 Tests, 287 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for Australia from 1996-2008. Gilchrist had much success with the Deccan Chargers and later joined the Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab) before calling time on his cricketing career in 2013. He amassed 2069 runs in 80 matches at an average of 27.22 and strike-rate of 138.39. His highest score was 109* and he hit 2 centuries and 11 fifties in his career. 1. Warne played 145 Tests, garnering a record 708 wickets and in 194 ODIs, he took 293 wickets. He was a legend of the game who passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 52 in back in the year 2022. He was brought on board by Rajasthan Royals in a dual role as captain and coach, and he won them the IPL title in the inaugural edition itself. Warne’s captaincy acumen was evidence of what Australia missed out on by not making him skipper. Warne played 55 games from 2008-2011 and picked 57 wickets with bes bowling figures of 4/21 in the cash-rich league.
