Malaysia have been an associate member of the ICC since 1967. Since 1979, they have appeared in seven World Cup Qualifier editions. The South East Asian cricketing team played in five editions of the ACC Twenty20 Cup from 2007-15 but they are yet to claim any title.
In the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, they qualified for the quarter-finals. Malaysia hosted the Asia Cup Qualifiers in 2018 but couldn’t take advantage of home conditions, ending up in the fifth spot in the competition. In the 2023 ACC Men’s Premier Cup, they were placed in Group A, along with Nepal, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
They could achieve only four points, beating Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and ended up in the third spot in their group. Increasing the number of teams in the Asia Cup could help Malaysia to develop their cricket as they might get the opportunity to play cricket against quality sides such as India and Pakistan and learn something from these teams.
