5 Deserving Players who missed out on India squad for New Zealand tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the squads for the upcoming away bilateral series against New Zealand and Bangladesh respectively. There are some familiar faces and new players in the squad and seasoned campaigners like skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and, KL Rahul have been rested for this white-ball series as a part of the workload management. Meanwhile, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be missing out on the upcoming limited-overs series as he continues to nurse his back injury and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has also been excluded as he recovers from a knee injury. However, there are some deserving players who have not been considered for this away bilateral series due to unknown reasons and without further ado, here's a look at five of them. 1. Prithvi Shaw This is arguably the biggest disappointment as Prithvi Shaw continues to play the waiting game despite showcasing consistent performances. He has been overlooked by the national selectors regularly even though he keeps performing outstandingly well again and again on the 22 yards in the domestic circuit. Shaw has not been in the Indian team management's scheme of things since July 2021 and had last donned the India jersey during an away limited-overs bilateral series against Sri Lanka. The Mumbai cricketer was also not included in the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home even when the Men in Blue had fielded a second-string squad with the T20 World Cup bound players being rested. 2. Ravi Bishnoi It is indeed surprising that youngster Ravi Bishnoi has been left out from the Indian squad for the New Zealand series even though he was a part of India's white-ball setup throughout this year. In fact, Bishnoi had also played the Asia Cup where he at least picked up a wicket in each game. Bishnoi was then named in the T20 World Cup 2022 standby players' category with a cut-throat competition in the spin department as there were seasoned spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and, Yuzvendra Chahal. The budding leggie picked up 16 wickets from the 10 matches that he played this year at an outstanding economy of 7.08. It is surprising that he missed out on a place in the New Zealand tour. 3. Ishan Kishan Ishan Kishan has been in and out of the Indian white-ball setup since the second half of this year and his inconsistent batting performances eventually cost him a place in the T20 World Cup 2022 squad. Ishan did get a shot at redemption during the home ODI series against South Africa and even though he scored a match-winning 93 in the second game, he failed to impress in the first and final matches as a result of which he might have been excluded from the New Zealand series. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are the two frontline wicketkeepers for the New Zealand series. However, the left-hander has been picked in the ODI squad against Bangladesh. 4. Mohammed Shami While Mohammed Shami has been a regular face in India's Test setup, he has not been playing consistently in the limited overs. In fact, the senior pacer was drafted into the Indian squad as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for the ongoing T20 World Cup. The most astonishing thing is that Shami had not played T20Is after the last edition's T20 World Cup in the UAE prior to this. Meanwhile, he is consistently picking up wickets with the ball in hand in the ongoing tournament. However, the 32-year-old has been excluded from the Indian squad for the upcoming white-ball series in New Zealand and it is unknown whether this has been done as a part of the BCCI's workload management. 5. Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik is yet another surprise exclusion from the Indian squad for the New Zealand series. He made a successful comeback into the Indian team after performing excellently in the IPL 2022 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and has also proved to be an impactful finisher after donning the India jersey once again. Nonetheless, Karthik has not been able to showcase good performances so far in the T20 World Cup and after the end of the tournament he would not be on that flight to New Zealand for the white-ball series. The selectors have supposedly not preferred the veteran cricketer to be in their scheme of things in the long run. Since the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter does not feature in the ODIs anymore, there might be a possibility of the team management and the selection commitee looking beyond the 37-year-old in the shortest format as they start their planning for the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024.
