5 domestic players who are in line to get Test cap soon

Following India’s 209-run humiliating defeat at the hands of Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023, Indian cricket supporters are demanding changes in the Test squad. Noting back-to-back failures of senior stalwarts, fans want the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to trust new faces to take the team ahead in the future. Recently, some names have performed exceptionally in domestic cricket, and noting their performances, the board has included a few players in India’s Test team that will tour the West Indies in July 2023. During the Caribbean tour, these players are favourites to make their Tests debuts, while some who didn’t get selected for the upcoming Test series might be seen donning India whites in the near future. Here are five domestic players who are favourites to get their debut Test caps soon 5. Abhimanyu Easwaran Abhimanyu Easwaran. (Photo Source: Twitter) Bengal top-order Abhimanyu Easwaran didn’t get a Test call-up for the West Indies tour but he could become a part of India’s squad in the upcoming months. In the domestic circuit, he is active for Bengal since 2013 and so far, he has scored 6567 runs with 22 tons and 26 fifties in 152 innings of 88 matches. In the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, Bengal concluded their journey as runners-up, losing to Saurashtra in the final at Eden Gardens. As an opener, Easwaran played his part efficiently in the competition, delivering fabulous starts to his team. Notching up 798 runs with three centuries and three fifties in 14 innings of eight Tests, he ended up becoming the third-leading run-scorer for Bengal in the tournament. The right-handed batter has a lot of experience in the domestic circuit and noting that, the board might trust him to represent the national team in the longest format of the sport in the near future. 4. Mukesh Kumar Mukesh Kumar. (Photo Source: Twitter) Along with Easwaran, another Bengal stalwart Mukesh Kumar has also succeeded in impressing Indian cricket fans. Mukesh, who is playing first-class cricket since October 2015, has done a spectacular job for Bengal as a medium pacer in the domestic arena. In the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, Mukesh looked incredible with the ball, claiming 22 wickets in 10 innings of five matches. With these bowling numbers, he became the third-highest wicket-taker for Bengal in the tournament, following Ishan Porel (27 wickets) and Akash Deep (41 wickets). Considering his overwhelming bowling figures for Bengal in the domestic tournament, selectors have picked up Mukesh for the West Indies tour to reinforce India’s pace unit. During the Windies assignment, Mukesh might get a Test cap and if so happens, he will look to put up an impressive show with the ball. 3. Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruturaj Gaikwad. In his vast first-class career, the right-handed batter has amassed 1941 runs with six centuries and nine fifties in 47 innings of 28 matches. Following Gaikwad’s recent form and domestic numbers, selectors gave him a spot in India’s 16-member Test team that will tour the Caribbean islands and play a couple of Tests against the West Indies. The 26-year-old also played four games in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, in which he racked up 364 runs with a ton and a couple of half-centuries in seven innings. In the upcoming tournament, he will look forward to giving his best if the team management hands him his debut Test cap. Gaikwad has the ability to play attacking cricket for India. In January, this year, he scored a swift knock of 195 off 184 against Tamil Nadu in match 86 of the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 and received the Player of the Match award. 2. Ishan Kishan Ishan Kishan. So far, KS Bharat has failed to provide solid batting figures to the Indian team and his back-to-back failures could open the doors for Ishan Kishan, who is yet to make his debut for India in whites. Kishan’s batting numbers are amazing in first-class cricket. Serving Jharkhand in 48 Tests, Kishan has piled up 2985 runs with six centuries and 16 fifties in 82 innings. Kishan exuded confidence with his bat for his team in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23. Scoring 180 runs in just four innings of two games, he drew attention towards himself. In the eighth match of the tournament, Jharkhand got defeated by Kerala by 85 runs, but in the losing cause, Kishan looked confident with his bat, slamming a 132-run knock in the first innings. Relying on his potential and skills, the Indian team management and captain Rohit Sharma might not dither to give him a chance in the playing XI against the Caribbeans. 1. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he became the fifth-highest run-getter with 625 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 163.61. Earlier, the southpaw performed magnificently for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 as well. Playing five games in the tournament, Jaiswal looked impactful with his bat, scoring 315 runs with a century in nine innings. In the 26th match of the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, Jaiswal grabbed a lot of eyeballs for his scintillating knock of 162 that helped his team to hammer Hyderabad by an innings and 217 runs. Taking note of Yashasvi’s stunning form, selectors have included him in India’s Test team against the Caribbeans. During the Windies tour, the team management may assign him the task to serve the side as a top-order batter.
