3. Shakib Al Hasan’s 121 against England (2019 World Cup)

In the 12th contest of the 2019 World Cup, England hosted Bangladesh at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Unlike their previous meeting in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup editions, it was unlikely for Bangladesh to pull off an upset against England as the hosts were the favourites to lift the distinguished trophy in their den due to home advantage.

At the toss, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza came out as a winner and invited the hosts to bat first. His decision completely backfired as England batters came heavily on Bangladesh’s bowling attack and racked up 386/6. Pursuing the colossal total, both Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar struggled to accumulate runs and departed without contributing anything solid to their side.

However, it was Shakib Al Hasan, who showed courage and helped his team to end the game with a respectable total of 280 in 48.5 overs. Against England’s fierce pace-bowling unit, Shakib played some exquisite strokes and concluded his innings on 121 off 119 with 12 fours and a maximum.
