Steve Waugh (AUS) vs India, Melbourne, 1986
Steve Waugh was usually seen as a very good guy who adhered to the rules and regulations of the game. One of the best batters of his era and captain of perhaps the greatest Australian team in the modern generation, Steve Waugh had quite a long career, spanning from 1984 to 2003.
And surprisingly, ‘Tugga’ as he was known, makes it onto this list as well. The incident involving Steve Waugh happened during an ODI match in 1986 between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Kris Srikkanth cut a short delivery from the bowler straight to Steve Waugh at point, who took the catch with reverse cup hands. The ball burst through Waugh’s fingers. He juggled it and tried to hold on to it at the second attempt, but failed. The fielder, though, claimed the catch on rebound.
However, Srikkanth stood his ground and the on-field umpires, before the days of TV umpires, discussed the issue amongst themselves and gave the batter Not Out. However, later, replays showed that the ball had touched the ground before Waugh could secure it properly.
