Rajasthan Royals had a great beginning in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they won a title in the inaugural edition. But after that victory, their journey was not smooth as they struggled to qualify for the playoffs for consecutive four seasons. In 2013, 2015 and 2018, they made it to the playoffs, but could not impress much. Ahead of the 2022 season, RR roped in some quality players such as Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal to rebuild their team to repeat their 2008 performance. Fortunately, the changes RR did to get positive results worked as the team in the last edition delivered impressive performances throughout the competition, and ended up as runners-up. Their players Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal also created history by clinching the Orange Cap and Purple Cap respectively. In the coming season, the team would look forward to continuing the momentum they got in the last season. Despite not having star-studded teams in the past such as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), RR have established themselves as a quality side, achieving some great records relying on their young talents. Here are 5 major records made by Rajasthan Royals in IPL history: 5. Most hat-tricks by a team (4 times) Rajasthan Royals hold record of picking up the most hat-tricks (four times) as a team. In 2012, Ajit Chandila became the first RR cricketer to pick up a hat-trick. Playing against Pune Warriors India (PWI), Chandila helped RR defend 170 by bagging the wickets of Jesse Ryder, Sourav Ganguly and Robin Uthappa. In 2014, Pravin Tambe took a hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), dismissing Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan and Ryan Ten Doeschate. In the same edition, Shane Watson also grabbed wickets against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to become the third RR player to take a hat-trick in the tournament. He pulled off the feat by getting rid of Shikhar Dhawan, Moises Henriques and Karn Sharma. The last RR hat-trick was in the last edition as Yuzvendra Chahal hunted the wickets of KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins. 4. Highest successful run chase (226/6 vs Punjab Kings, 2020) In IPL 2020, Rajasthan Royals routed Punjab Kings and surpassed their 2008 record of chasing the biggest target in the league. Playing at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Rajasthan Royals invited Punjab Kings to bat first. Riding high on KL Rahul’s 69 off 54 and Mayank Agarwal’s stunning knock of 106 in 50, the Kings posted 223 runs on the board. Coming out to chase, RR didn’t get the desired start as Jos Buttler went back to the pavilion early, scoring only four runs. However, with Steve Smith’s 50 runs off 27 deliveries and Sanju Samson’s 85 off 42 balls, the team remained alive in the chase. With 51 runs required in the last three overs, Rahul Tewatia and Robin Uthappa were present on the crease and they were expected to play explosive innings. Taking the charge, Tewatia smashed Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes to turn the match towards Rajasthan. Eventually, his 53-run innings off 31 deliveries played a crucial part in helping RR emerge victorious in the contest. 3. Fastest hundred by an Indian (Yusuf Pathan’s 100 off 37 deliveries, 2010) In 2010, the second match delivered phenomenal entertainment. Playing against Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR) player Yusuf Pathan notched up a century in just 37 deliveries, which is still the fastest ton by any Indian in the league. Batting first at the Brabourne Stadium, MI posted a humongous 212 runs on the board on the back of half-centuries from youngsters Saurabh Tiwary (53 off 33) and Ambati Rayudu (55 off 33). Pursuing the huge chase, the Royals were in trouble at 66/4. However, things changed for the team after the arrival of their aggressive batter Yusuf Pathan as he displayed courage by playing some elegant strokes against MI bowlers. Pathan missed no chance to smash MI bowlers and brought up his century in 37 deliveries. However, in the end, MI triumphed by four runs. 2. Fewest defeats in an edition (3 losses, 2008) Rajasthan Royals Lost only three games in the whole season in 2008 and also clinched the trophy. No team has lost fewer games in any edition of the tournament. The Royals while achieving this feat outclassed other teams in the competition with their brilliant performance in both the league round and knockout stage. Clinching 11 victories out of 14 games in the round-robin stage, the team topped the table with 22 points. Among star-studded squads such as Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Mumbai Indians (MI), Deccan Chargers (DC), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), RR were not considered favourites to grab the title. However, their players drew attention by becoming contenders for the title in the knockouts. After having a brilliant run in the group stage, RR continued their form in the knockouts. Eventually, the team brought down Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the semi-final and final respectively to clinch their maiden title. 1. Highest team total batting second (223/5 vs Chennai Super Kings, 2010) In the 15 editions of the IPL, Rajasthan Royals have been a part of many fascinating high-scoring encounters. In 2010 IPL, one such contest was when RR clashed with CSK at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk. Losing the toss, RR bowled first and failed to stop Murali Vijay, who smashed 127 off just 56. Along with him, Albie Morkel also chipped in with 62 off 34 to post a massive total of 246 runs. Coming out to pursue the mammoth target, Rajasthan Royals exuded confidence as their openers Michael Lumb and Naman Ojha stitched an opening stand of 69 runs in only 7.2 overs. After Lumb’s dismissal, Yusuf Pathan also went to the pavilion early scoring only four runs. However, Naman Ojha (94 off 55) and Shane Watson (60 off 25) fought hard to take the game close. In the end, RR lost the game by 23 runs scoring 223/5, but they created the record of scoring the most runs in the league while batting second.
