5 Signature dishes inspired by cities of IPL teams

The Indian Premier League fever has gripped the nation as the IPL 2024 tournament is going in full swing and is in its third week. The Indian Premier League has 10 teams representing various cities and regions of the country. Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore represent the South of India. Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are from the North of India. Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans are from the Western part of India. Kolkata Knight Riders are from the East part of India and Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants represent the central India part. As the teams represent various regions of India, something similar is with the food of those regions. There are various dishes that have been made by different restaurants inspired by the Indian Premier League teams and the cities they are based on. Here are 5 signature dishes inspired by IPL teams and their cities: 1. Kolkata Fried Riders Kolkata-based fried fish dish. Photo- Twitter Kolkata Fried Riders is a fish dish inspired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The franchise is based out of the capital of West Bengal state, Kolkata. The region is near the Bay of Bengal and is known for its variety of fish available for consumption and dishes that are made from fish. The Kolkata Fried Riders is a dish made from breaded and fried white fish fillet rolls stuffed with curried shrimp and served with a kasundi mustard spiked salad. Another similar food is the Pork Powerplay, the hugely popular steamed and pan-fried Kolkata-style dumplings. 2. Delhi Butter Chicken Bouncer Butter Chicken The Delhi Capitals the franchise which was formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, are based out of the national capital of India, Delhi. The franchise has seen local players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and a few more captaining the team including the current skipper Rishabh Pant. The franchise is yet to win an IPL trophy but has made it into the final once in IPL 2020. The food that best represents Delhi Capitals is the Butter Chicken Bouncer, a chargrilled chicken tikka, and creamy makhani stuffed spring roll. Other popular Delhi-inspired dishes are seekh kebabs, and its vegetarian version known as Veggie Daredevils, a pan-seared melt-in-the-mouth vegetarian shami kebab made from lightly spiced raw jackfruit and lentils. 3. Rajasthan Lal Maas Royals Rajasthani Laal Maas. Photo- Rediff Rajasthan Royals is the IPL franchise based in the capital of the state of Rajasthan, Jaipur. Rajasthan is the land of warriors and an unending desert. The team was the first-ever winner of the Indian Premier League in IPL 2008. They also made it into the finals of the tournament in IPL 2022, losing to Gujarat Titans in the final. Rajasthan is famous for its meat dishes given the lack of water in the state. And the most famous Rajasthan Royals-inspired dish are the Rajasthan Lal Maas Royals, Mohan Mass sizzler, and Skipper Rolls. There are other delicacies as well made from vegetables like the all-time classic Mirchi Pakora and Kachori. 4. Bangalore Chicken Challenger Bangalore Chicken Curry. Photo- Twitter Royal Challengers Bengaluru is the franchise originating from the IT hub of India, Bengaluru. The RCB franchise, which has been captained by local heroes like Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid, reached its peak under Virat Kohli. Kohli has been part of the RCB since the inception of the IPL in 2008. However, despite reaching the finals thrice, RCB is yet to win an IPL title. The most well-known RCB-inspired dish might be the Bangalore Chicken Challenger. A signature Bengaluru chicken dish, made from a base of onion, ginger, garlic, and coconut milk combined with all the spices. Chicken Curry is one of the most popular dishes in India. 5. Mumbai Indians Vada Pav Mumbai Vada Pav. Photo- iStock Mumbai Indians, along with Chennai Super Kings, have won the Indian Premier League the most times. The formerly Rohit Sharma-led MI team won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, in a controversial decision, Rohit Sharma’s decade-long captaincy reign was ended by the MI management and the team is now being captained by Hardik Pandya in 2024. If any food dish represents Mumbai Indians, which originate from the financial capital of India, Mumbai, is the quintessential Vada pav. Vada is a fried ball of spicy smashed potato mix that includes green chilies, garlic, ginger, and other spices. The balls are coated in a batter of gram flour and fried. It is then served sandwiched in a pav or local Mumbai bread along with 2-3 types of chutneys.
