Asia Cup 2022: 5 Players who featured in the tournament but will not be playing T20 World Cup

The Asia Cup, hosted just a month and a half prior to the T20 World Cup, is a dress rehearsal tournament before the teams visit Australia. In the tournament, when players like Virat Kohli, Ibrahim Zadran and Pathum Nissanka got back to rhythm, players like Babar Azam, Yuzvendra Chahal or Shakib Al Hasan had a tournament to forget. Despite their poor form, none of them will be excluded from the T20 World Cup but things need to change massively. Even though these players will be backed because of their previous performances, there are five players who are very unlikely to play the World Cup starting 22nd October. While some failed to live up to their potential, others have been ruled out following an injury or retired from the game. Thus, here’s five players who featured in the Asia Cup but are likely to miss the T20 World Cup in Australia: 1. Ravindra Jadeja Ravindra Jadeja’s injury is a massive blow to the Indian team. He missed the crucial juncture of the Asia Cup after being ruled out following a knee injury. The team combination was shattered in his absence as India lost two back-to-back matches at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to get knocked out of the tournament. Axar Patel, who’s considered as a like or like replacement for Jadeja, is likely to get a call for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Even though Axar was available for selection in the latter half of the continental cup, the team management didn’t bat an eye. Thus, it’s tough to predict his role in the Indian T20I set-up. Meanwhile, BCCI is very upset with Jadeja as the 33-year-old injured himself while playing adventurous sports in Dubai. The southpaw in India’s very first match of the Asia Cup played a valuable innings of 35 runs off 29 deliveries. In the absence of a left-handed batter, Jadeja proved valuable up in the order. The team management replaced him with Rishabh Pant, who once again had a very poor tournament. 2. Mushfiqur Rahim After a horrible last couple of months, Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from T20I cricket and thus will not feature in the upcoming World Cup. Ever since the last T20 World Cup, the 35-year-old failed to live up to his potential and in the Asia Cup, his poor form continued. The wicket-keeper batter scored a total of 5 runs in the tournament as Bangladesh were knocked out early in the tournament. It’s not just the runs, his keeping skills have been poor off late as his blunder against Sri Lanka proved vital from Bangladesh’s point of view. The former captain of the Bangladesh team played 102 T20I matches and scored 1500 runs in the shortest format of the game. He has a strike-rate of 115.03, which of course is considered as very poor in T20 cricket. Following his exit from this format of the game, Rahim wants to concentrate more on ODIs and Test cricket. 3. Avesh Khan In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar, Avesh Khan had the perfect platform to showcase his skills. The 25-year-old failed to do so as he gave away 72 runs in the six overs that he bowled in the Asia Cup. He did pick two wickets in the meantime but his performance was widely criticised. With Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel set to return for the T20 World Cup, Avesh Khan is very likely to lose his spot in the squad. Deepak Chahar replaced the speedster for India’s final match in the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka and with that, he once again needs to go back to his basics and make a comeback. The Madhya Pradesh-born pacer represented India in 15 T20Is and picked up 13 wickets in the process. With an economy of 9.10, his exclusion from the team is considered to be just a matter of time. 4. Charith Asalanka Even though Asalanka is a technically sound cricketer, his performances in the Asia Cup was a disaster. 0,1,8,0 are his scores in the four matches that he played and with that, his inclusion in the T20 World Cup looks very unlikely. He was dropped from Sri Lanka’s final super four match against Pakistan and was replaced by Dhananjaya De Silva who did extremely well. Danushka Gunathilaka was promoted up the order with Dhananjaya batting at number four. Asalanka’s T20I numbers look pretty average as well. Batting at number three, the southpaw played 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka and scored 530 runs. With a strike-rate of 119.63, Asalanka needs to prove himself in the nets to earn his ticket for the T20 World Cup. 5. Hasan Ali Hasan Ali was never Pakistan’s first choice in the Asia Cup. With Shaheen Shah Afridi (right knee ligament injury) and Mohammad Wasim Jr. (side strain) ruled out of the tournament, he was called up as a replacement. Even being one of the most experienced bowlers in the squad, Babar Azam and company didn’t pick him in the first team. He played in the final match of the super four against Sri Lanka and gave away 25 runs in the three overs that he bowled. He is very unlikely to play the final of the Asia Cup as Naseem Shah is expected to replace him. If Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr. recover on time for the T20 World Cup, Hasan Ali will not find his place in the squad. However, if he gets a call-up against England in the next series, the 28-year-old will look forward to changing that with his performances.
