After the 2014 Asia Cup, Afghanistan failed to qualify for the Super Four round of the continental championship for the first time. The Afghan side who were placed in Group B along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, failed to showcase their best in the competition and ended their journey in the group round itself.
In their opening match at the Gaddafi Stadium, Bangladesh outclassed them and registered a comfortable 89-run win. The Afghan side struggled against the Bangla team in all departments of the game on that day which came out as a concern for Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men.
After the hammering from Bangladesh, Afghanistan met Sri Lanka at the Gaddafi Stadium. It was a do-or-die contest for the Afghan team. In the important game, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first. The co-hosts posted 291 runs on the board in their 50 overs. Afghanistan were required to chase down the target within 38 overs to qualify for the next round. The courageous batting displays from the skipper Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi took Afghanistan close to the target but in the end, they fell two runs short.
