Border-Gavaskar trophy 2022-23: Alex Carey looking to rely on sweeps to score runs in Ahmedabad test

Australia wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey believes that his chances of being effective with the bat is more if he goes for playing shots, instead of defending. So far, he has failed to contribute big with his bat scoring only 56 runs in five innings of three matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy. Going into the final Test, Carey is looking forward to not go all defensive and rely on his favourite sweep shots to put runs on the board.

Talking to reporters, the Aussie wicketkeeper recalled his dismissal in the first Test. ''I had some confidence out of the first game and then getting out defending, am I happy with that? Not really,'' said Carey.

''I think probably just sticking to my method now and understanding if you chase it too much then you might get yourself into trouble. So yeah, back my strength and try to score with the sweeps and manipulate a little bit more that way. In India, if you change your method too much, it goes pretty quickly. I’ll continue to be positive over here,'' Carey further said about scoring with the sweeps.

After getting hammered in the Delhi Test by six wickets, the Aussies made a comeback in the penultimate test in Indore. They had avoided going after reckless shots to not give away their wickets. But Carey seems to be in a different mood ahead of the fourth Test, not forcing himself to play against his strength.

Carey acknowledged the different batting styles that the players bring with them and spoke about how each player adds value to the team with their unique tactics. 

''We all know that our players play differently, Travis (Head) will play an aggressive nature and Peter (Handscomb) will grind out runs, and he's played beautifully. And Steve (Smith) does it his way. We’ve all got different methods and, internally, we live with that. So looking forward to another opportunity in Ahmedabad and get down and maybe get the broom out again,” he said.

Talking about Australia’s DRS blunder and his phenomenal show behind the stumps to dismiss India captain Rohit Sharma, he said “Instinct takes over when you see a ball bounce like that. I don’t think many of us were expecting an eight-degree turning ball that early in the game. But it was nice to hold on to that and for us to get a bit of momentum.

It was nice after we missed a couple of reviews (in the first over of the game ) to get that one – I thought once the big screen showed the nick, I thought he might have settled in for a nice 150 or something like that,'' Carey commented.
