Cricketers who have gotten injured in unusual ways

Life is full of injuries, particularly for those who play professional cricket. For a variety of causes, cricket players have frequently suffered injuries while representing their teams at the national and international levels. Most of the time, players often get injured on the field. The most common causes of player injuries have been physical exhaustion, being struck by the ball, and getting injured doing drills before the match. Nonetheless, there have been instances in which cricket players have suffered bizarre injuries even before taking the pitch to play a match. Such unusual injuries even led to players missing a match or being away from the game for a significant amount of time. Here are a few Cricketers who have got injured in unusual ways: 10. Alyssa Healy

The latest entry into this pain hall of fame is Alyssa Healy. The Australian women’s team keeper-batter was ruled out of the entire Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL 2023) after she was bitten by her own dogs, leading to a gruesome finger injury. She was required to undergo surgery and didn’t suffer any major damage. Healy was trying to separate her puppies at home last weekend when she was accidentally bitten, severely cutting her right index finger. An artery had been severed, but there was no damage to the bone or tendon, therefore the accident required surgery. 9. Brad Hodge

Brad Hodge is often considered one of the unluckiest players not to play more cricket for Australia. Despite scoring over 17000 runs in First-Class cricket, Hodge only played 6 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 15 T20Is for Australia, scoring over 1200 runs with a century each in Tests and ODIs. However, Hodge was also a victim of an unusual injury as well which made him miss a T20I match. In Perth ahead of a T20 against New Zealand in 2007, Hodge went to put on his team uniform, but when he was putting on his trousers, he felt a sharp pain in his back, which prevented him from playing. This led to Australia giving a debut to Luke Pomersbach, who was in the stands to watch the match. 8. Dane van Niekerk

South Africa Women’s cricketer Dane van Niekerk, probably has one of the funniest kitchen-related injuries on this list. She had to miss multiple matches in WBBL in 2019 after injuring her hand having "tried to stab an avocado" and badly slicing her palm. Teammate Ellyse Perry responded by gifting her avocado-themed shirt and trousers and a peeler. 7. Jimmy Adams

Jimmy Adams was flying to South Africa with the West Indies team for a tour in 1998. While having his in-flight meal, Adam reportedly cut through two tendons in his right hand. This happened when he was attempting to cut open a crusty roll with a plastic knife. Adams got off the plane and went straight to the hospital before heading back to the airport for a flight home. 6. Jonny Bairstow

England keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was enjoying a purple patch with the bat in 2022. Just ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, Bairstow was at the third hole at Pannal Golf Club in Yorkshire when he slipped down a steep slope, landing awkwardly. This landing resulted in Bairstow breaking his fibula in three places and badly twisting his ankle. He underwent surgery and went on to miss the T20 World Cup in Australia, the Pakistan tour, and the IPL 2023. 5. Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden didn’t have any good luck with dogs either. In 2006, while nursing a broken finger, Matthew Hayden suffered a gashed ankle after being attacked by a dog. The opener had revealed that he was on a jog when the canine attacked him and went after his ankle. Tests revealed there was no ankle tendon or ligament damage. Hayden said the wound, about five centimetres long, had to be kept open for several days to minimize the risk of infection before being stitched. Hayden jokingly said that it wasn’t his week. 4. Mitchell Marsh

Western Australia captain Mitchell Marsh damaged his dominant right hand in 2019. This happened after he smashed it into the WACA dressing room wall after being dismissed on the final day of the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania. Mitchell Marsh was called an idiot for his stupidity in fracturing his hand on the eve of the Test summer. 3. Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock had his encounter with dogs in 2016. While walking his two Russell terriers, De Kock got entangled in the leashes and fell. This resulted in him twisting his knee in the process. The keeper-batter was ruled out of Johannesburg Test against England in 2015-16. 2. Ben Stokes

England all-rounder Ben Stokes also lost his battle with a wall and suffered a stupid injury in the process. Ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2014, Ben Stokes broke his hand punching a locker after being dismissed against West Indies in Barbados. This happened after his first-ball dismissal by Krishmar Santokie. 1. Glenn Maxwell

After the T20 World Cup 2022, Glenn Maxwell broke his leg during a birthday party at a friend’s house. He was running in the backyard chasing his friend during the party and his friend slipped and fell on him. This resulted in Maxwell shattering his fibula. Moreover, he got his tibia chipped and Glenn Maxwell ended up having all his ligaments around his ankle area ruptured. The allrounder needed a metal plate put in it to hold it all together. As a result, the explosive Australian batter missed the entire 2022-23 summer of cricket.
