The Champions Trophy 2025 was yet another title Virat Kohli won in his revered international career. This was the second time the ace Indian batter won the marquee ODI tournament, the first instance being in 2013. Kohli played his part in contributing to the triumph. He registered 218 runs in five innings, comprising one half-century and an unbeaten ton.

With the recent 50-over triumph, Kohli etched his name alongside former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting. The former Indian skipper became level with Ponting in terms of the most number of ICC titles won by male cricketers. Barring the two Champions Trophy titles Kohli's won, he has also emerged victorious in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and last year's T20 World Cup. The first ICC title Kohli won was while leading India U19 to the Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

As for Ponting, his first taste of Cricket World Cup glory came in 1999 under the leadership of Steve Waugh. The 2003 and 2007 editions of the revered 50-over global spectacle was won with Ponting at the helm. In addition to the three titles, Ponting also led Australia to Champions Trophy glory in 2006 and 2009. It is not for nothing that he is considered as one of the most successful captains when it comes to international cricket with respect to the impact the charismatic leader had on Australian cricket.

The Cricket World Cup 2027 is still a long way off. It is still not clear whether Kohli would go on to feature in that tournament for India. However, based on his insatiable hunger for more in addition to his supreme fitness levels, Kohli seems to be on his way to play for the Men in Blue in the grand event two years down the line. If India manage to clinch the title with Kohli playing for them, Kohli will have overtaken Ponting to become the first cricketer in men's cricket to have won a total of eight ICC titles. The 2026 T20 World Cup is also there. However, Kohli will not play that tournament due to him already retiring from the format in 2024.
