1. Joe Root

Former England cricketer Joe Root was head and shoulder above anyone else in the Test series. The 33-year-old made 375 runs at an average of 75 in three matches in the series and finished as the leading run-scorer. He led the team from the front as England's openers had a rough time but Root most of the time managed to take control of the situation.

Notably, Root hit a half-century in the second innings of the first Test and hit a twin century in the Lord’s Test. He now has 34 centuries in Test cricket, which is more than any current cricketer. He was the point of difference in the second Test and was also named Player of the Tournament alongside Kamindu.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando too deserves credit for picking 17 wickets in the series - the most by any player. He picked up a four-for in the first Test and a five-for in the first innings of the second Test.
