Flashback: What happened on Bangladesh's last Test tour of India?

India and Bangladesh are set to lock horns in a two-match Test series, starting with the first encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, starting September 19. The second match will be held in Green Park, Kanpur from September 27. This series begins a stretch of five Test matches for India on their home soil as they are scheduled to play three matches against New Zealand next month.

Bangladesh faced India for the first time in the longest format of the game in November 2000. However, it took the two teams 17 years to play a Test match in India. Meanwhile, the last time Bangladesh toured India to play a Test series was in 2019, where they lost both the matches comprehensively. However, there were some interesting takeaways from the tour.

This will be the ninth series between the two sides and Bangladesh will be hoping to come close to recording their first Test win against India, having stunned Pakistan at their home earlier this month.

First Test: India win by an innings and 130 runs

The first Test was played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Mominul Haque, captaining Bangladesh for the first time in Tests, won the toss and opted to bat first. However, the visitors were rolled over for 150 as Mohammed Shami starred with figures of 3/27. In reply, Mayank Agarwal hit his highest Test score of 243 off 330 balls. Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravindra Jadeja also scored half-centuries as India declared at 493/6, taking a lead of 343 runs.

In their second innings, Shami ruled the roost once again as he finished with excellent figures of 4/31 in 16 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin also bagged a three-for as Bangladesh were dismissed for 213 on Day 3. India won by an innings and 130 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Agarwal was named Player of the Match for his heroics with the bat.

Second Test: India win by an innings and 46 runs

The second Test was held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Once again, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. This as the first day/night Test played by either team and also the first day/night Test match held in India. In the first innings, the Indian pacers wreaked havoc as Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Shami picked up five, three, and two wickets, respectively. The tourists were rolled over for 106 in just 30.3 overs.

In reply, India declared for 347/9 after Virat Kohli slammed 136 off 194 balls. This was his 20th century as India's captain in Tests and 70th overall. He equalled Ricky Ponting's record for most centuries scored as a skipper in international cricket (41). This was incidentally his last century as captain and he had to wait for almost three years to register a three-figure score, which came in the 2022 Asia Cup against Afghanistan. In Bangladesh's second innings, they could only manage 195, with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring a half-century. Umesh bagged a five-for, while Ishant backed up his first innings heroics with a four-wicket haul.
