5. MS Dhoni (wk)
MS Dhoni made his last appearance in international cricket in the 2019 World Cup. The former India skipper played all nine matches and scored 273 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 87.78. During the competition, the wicketkeeper batter was criticised for his slow innings against Afghanistan.
Against New Zealand, when India were heading towards an embarrassing loss with their score of 92 at a loss of six wickets, Dhoni held his nerves and stitched a crucial 116-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket. In the end, India lost the game by 18 runs but the veteran’s 50-run knock kept the team alive in the chase till the last over.
On the occasion of India’s 73rd Independence Day, Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket. Currently, the legendary wicketkeeper batter serves Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After international retirement, he led CSK to a couple of title victories (2021 and 2023) as a skipper in the cash-rich league.
