IPL 2023: 5 Players Sunrisers Hyderabad might trade in trading window

It was a season of two contrasting halves for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. Kane Williamson & co. were in red-hot form after the end of seven games riding on a five-match winning streak but then they lost their steam and succumbed to five consecutive defeats. SRH ended their season at the eighth position with six wins in 14 games. Kane Williamson has failed to lead his side to a playoff berth for two straight years now. The team management under the newly appointed Head Coach Brian Lara could do some personnel changes to improve the depth of the side. In the bid to do so, players who failed to prove their mettle in the 2022 season could be released in the forthcoming trading window. Let us look at the players SRH might trade in the trading window: 5. Kartik Tyagi Kartik Tyagi grabbed a lot of headlines for his impeccable performances during the U19 World Cup 2020 where he took 11 wickets in six games. The youngster made his IPL debut in 2020 and took nine wickets in ten games he played for Rajasthan Royals. The 21-year-old has shown a lot of promise and was picked by the Hyderabad franchise at this year’s Mega Auction. However, Tyagi could only get a few chances to showcase his skills and could not impress in those limited outings. He could only take one wicket in two matches and conceded runs at an economy of 9.88. Sunrisers already have top-quality pacers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, and Umran Malik in their ranks. With the trio fairing well for the franchise, Tyagi might have to warm the bench going forward as well. Therefore, Hyderabad could release him in the upcoming trading window and free up INR 4 crore. Other franchises will love to add the promising Indian pacer to their squad. 4. Abdul Samad Abdul Samad rose to prominence during the 2020 season of the IPL which saw him score impactful knocks for Sunrisers Hyderabad lower down the order. In the 12 games he played, the power-hitter scored 111 runs at an insane strike rate of 170.76. Though in the next year his strike rate dropped to 127.58, SRH showed faith in the Jammu & Kashmir batter and retained him for the 2022 season. The 20-year-old performed poorly in his starting two games scoring mere four runs in two matches at a strike rate of 57.14 and was dropped from the team. Shashank Singh was drafted in Samad’s place and played ten games smashing 69 runs at a strike rate of 146.81. Despite being one of the top retentions of the franchise, Samad was not backed for more games. With Shashank being given a longer run, it appears that SRH have moved past the Jammu & Kashmir batter. Thus, one could see Hyderabad releasing the youngster when the trading window opens and many franchises on the other hand could try to rope in the flamboyant batter in their line-up. 3. Fazalhaq Farooqi Fazalhaq Farooqi has been one of the exciting prospects in Afghanistan Cricket. He has been a strike force for his national side in white-ball cricket. Talking about the shortest format, the 22-year-old has picked up 18 wickets in 14 T20Is at a superb economy of 6.82. Sunrisers signed the left-arm pacer to bolster their pace bowling attack. Farooqi got a few chances in the second half of the tournament but was not able to make a mark with his performances. In three matches, he took two wickets and conceded runs at an economy of 9.17. SRH have quality left-arm pacers like T Natarajan and Marco Jansen and could be inclined towards releasing the Afghanistan pacer in the trading window after his mediocre outings with the ball. Franchises seeking a quality left-arm seamer could pick him in their side. 2. Sean Abbott Sean Abbott has been a proven performer in the T20 circuit. In the 2021-22 season of the Big Bash League, the 30-year-old showed his all-round prowess bagging 19 scalps in 14 games at an economy of 8.18 and scoring 117 runs at a strike rate of 118.18. Abbott has many slower ball variations up his sleeve and plays the role of a death overs specialist for his BBL franchise Sydney Sixers. SRH signed the bowling all-rounder for the 2022 season for INR 2.4 crore to add variety to their bowling arsenal. However, he failed to break into the playing XI for the majority of the season and featured in just a lone game. In that single game, the Australian cricketer leaked 47 runs in four overs and did not have much impact with the bat either. The ace all-rounder was not given another opportunity and this indicates that SRH do not see him in their plans going forward. With a quality bowling all-rounder like Marco Jansen in the mix, SRH could release Abbott in the near future and free up an overseas slot. 1. Romario Shepherd Romario Shepherd had a stellar campaign in the 2021 season of the Caribbean Premier League. He took 18 wickets in just nine games for Guyana Amazon Warriors at an economy of 7.69 and also scored 109 runs at a staggering strike rate of 165.15. Sunrisers went hammer and tongs for the West Indies all-rounder at the Mega Auction 2022 and grabbed him for a whooping sum of INR 7.75 crore. Romario did decently on the batting front scoring 58 runs at a strike rate of 141.46 in his three outings for SRH. However, he did not fare well with the ball and leaked runs at an economy of 10.89. Hyderabad’s team composition was such that it required the 27-year-old to play more as a bowler who bats but Romario was not able to perform as per expectations. Thus, they might look to trade the Caribbean all-rounder in the forthcoming trading window.
